About The Position

The Industrial Hygiene (IH) Supervisor provides leadership, operational oversight, and advanced technical expertise for UCSF's clinical safety and industrial hygiene programs. Working under broad management direction, the incumbent supervises professional and technical staff responsible for delivering industrial hygiene services, establishes program priorities, ensures the quality and consistency of technical work, and supports staff development while advancing departmental and institutional safety objectives. The IH Supervisor independently manages and performs a broad range of industrial hygiene services, including occupational exposure monitoring, indoor air quality investigations, hazard and risk assessments, local exhaust ventilation evaluations, accident investigations, respiratory protection activities, and other specialized industrial hygiene functions. In addition to directing the work of assigned staff, the incumbent personally performs complex technical assessments, investigations, and field activities when operational needs, staffing requirements, or the complexity of the issue warrant direct involvement. The IH Supervisor prepares and reviews technical reports and communicates complex scientific and regulatory information to diverse audiences across UCSF Campus and UCSF Health. The position coordinates and performs Environment of Care audits in accordance with Joint Commission standards, requiring comprehensive knowledge of healthcare fire and life safety, infection prevention, hazardous materials management, emergency management, and related Environment of Care principles. The IH Supervisor monitors compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation requirements and serves as an organizational liaison with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders. The position develops practical solutions to complex occupational health and safety challenges through the application of professional expertise, sound judgment, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The incumbent regularly represents Environmental Health & Safety at institutional committees, UC systemwide workgroups, professional organizations, and meetings with internal and external partners. Department Overview: UCSF’s Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) is dedicated to fostering a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible environment for all faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors across the University and UCSF Health system. EH&S serves as the central resource for workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance within a complex, multi-site academic health institution. The department provides comprehensive programs and services that support compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while enabling UCSF’s mission of advancing health through research, education, and patient care. Core program areas include biosafety, chemical safety, environmental protection, ergonomics, facilities safety, fire and life safety, industrial hygiene, radiation and laser safety, hazardous materials management, spill response, food facility safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) selection, hazardous building materials, and hazardous waste management, among others. EH&S partners closely with campus leadership, clinical operations, research programs, and affiliated organizations to proactively identify risks, implement effective controls, and promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility. The department also provides critical support to the UCSF Health system and multiple affiliated entities, ensuring consistent standards and practices across diverse operational settings. Through a combination of technical expertise, consultation, training, and program development, EH&S plays a vital role in maintaining compliance, reducing risk, and supporting the safe conduct of world-class research, education, and patient care activities at UCSF.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Life/Physical/Natural Sciences/Engineering/Industrial Hygiene or related area and 3-5 years relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc.
Skills to effectively direct and supervise subordinate staff who are assigned duties in different programs; skills to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas.
Solid written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including strong skills to interact successfully with a widely diverse population.
Solid skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
Solid skills to appropriately, efficiently and effectively respond to emergencies and critical situations.
Proficiency of Cal/OSHA, EPA and SFDPH.
Expertise in industrial hygiene and development of exposure monitoring programs.
Five or more years of progressively responsible industrial hygiene experience.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership, technical direction, and supervision for professional and technical staff, including work assignment, balancing of workloads, performance management, coaching, staff development, and corrective action as appropriate.
Supervises and coordinates the delivery of industrial hygiene and clinical safety services performed by assigned staff, including: Occupational exposure assessments and monitoring, Indoor air quality investigations, Hazard and risk assessments, Accident, injury, illness and near-miss investigations, Respiratory protection activities, Local exhaust ventilation evaluations, Clinical safety and Environment of Care inspections, Data collection, analysis, and technical reporting.
Leads recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and performance management to maintain a highly qualified industrial hygiene and safety workforce.
Leads recruitment activities and participates in candidate selection.
Establishes performance expectations and conducts performance evaluations.
Provides coaching, mentoring, and corrective feedback.
Develops onboarding and competency training.
Identifies professional development opportunities.
Ensures staff maintain required training and regulatory competencies.
Coordinates specialized training for Spill Response Team members.
Provides operational oversight of industrial hygiene programs, evaluates program performance and ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and institutional requirements.
Directs the development, implementation, periodic review, and continuous improvement of industrial hygiene policies, programs, and standard operating procedures, including: IIPP, Respiratory Protection Program, Occupational Exposure Monitoring Program, Carcinogen/Formaldehyde Program, Hearing Conservation Program, Laboratory Animal Allergen Control Program, Heat Illness Prevention Programs, Local Exhaust Ventilation SOPs, Spill Response Team SOPs, Emergency Eye Wash/Shower Assessment SOPs, Other programs, policies, and SOPs as needed.
Ensures programs remain aligned with applicable regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and industry best practices.
Directs the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of industrial hygiene and clinical safety services.
Monitors program performance, workload, response times, and service delivery to identify trends and improve operational effectiveness.
Oversees industrial hygiene operations supporting UCSF Campus and UCSF Health by assigning work, establishing priorities, monitoring service quality, and providing technical expertise for complex or sensitive issues.
Personally performs highly complex investigations, exposure assessments, audits, and other technical work when operational needs or issue complexity require direct involvement.
Oversees operation of the Respiratory Protection Program, supporting training and fit testing for more than 9,000 healthcare personnel annually.
Coordinates regulatory compliance activities associated with clinical safety and Environment of Care inspection programs.
Assists with purchasing decisions and resource planning to support program operations.
Provides guidance to subordinate staff on allocation of time and resources in support of contractual obligations to UCSF Health and other affiliates.
Ensures the quality, accuracy, and consistency of industrial hygiene documentation, technical reports, and regulatory records.
