About The Position

This position is responsible for administering hyperbaric oxygen therapy and diagnostic testing to patients of the Wound Care Center under the supervision of a Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse or Board Certified Hyperbaric Registered Physician. Assists in providing coverage when needed in the Wound Care Center in the absence of the Hyperbaric Registered Nurse. All therapeutic and diagnostic modalities will be ordered by the Hyperbaric Physician.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an approved hyperbaric medicine course required OR Graduate of RN or LPN accredited college.
  • Must hold a current license in EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, APRN or RT.
  • Must obtain a working knowledge of diving physics and physiology, as it would relate to administering hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments.
  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Able to lift/push/pull patients to transport and/or reposition.
  • Able to lift and carry equipment and supplies of 25 pounds or more.
  • Working under stressful conditions and irregular hours, exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm, and patience.
  • Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of six (6) months continuous experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Must be licensed within 1 year of employment for the HBO Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Administering hyperbaric oxygen therapy and diagnostic testing to patients.
  • Assisting in providing coverage in the Wound Care Center.
  • Directly participating with patient care and ensuring a safe and comforting environment.
  • Responding to patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Transporting patients as needed.
  • Welcoming patients and ensuring admission paperwork is available and participating in the admission process.
  • Assisting patients with ADLs including meals, bathing and hygiene needs.
  • Performing/Assisting with positioning patients and transferring patients from bed to chair or wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Performing/Assisting with range of motion exercises and ambulating.
  • Performing Cardiac Rehab exercises with patients as per protocol.
  • Reporting abnormal conditions to the RN in a timely manner.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of skin integrity with the use of emollients, creams, etc.
  • Caring for superficial skin tears under the direction of the RN.
  • Identifying the organization of the human body, including its systems, structure and functions.
  • Demonstrating general principles of cleanliness (asepsis).
  • Applying the principles of basic nutrition to patient care.
  • Providing basic emergency care.
  • Performing Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure.
  • Documenting required information and complying with all Point of Care quality control standards.
  • Identifying, reporting and recording changes that result from disease or trauma to patients respiratory, cardiovascular, neurologic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, reproductive, musculoskeletal, metabolic, psychological, integumentary, sensory, immune, hematologic and nutritional systems.
  • Observing, reporting and recording the patients condition.
  • Monitoring intravenous lines for adequacy of fluids and operations and reporting any non-functioning line as observed with visual inspection.
  • Performing oral/nasal/endotracheal suctioning.
  • Establishing patient setup/connection tasks including NIBP, SaO2 and ECG.
  • Collecting specimens such as urine, stool and sputum.
  • Applying warm and cold compresses.
  • Performing 12 lead EKG.
  • Monitoring and performing vital signs using a variety of equipment, and reporting abnormalities to RN.
  • Performing surgical preps on patients.
  • Obtaining weights and basic patient information on new admissions.
  • Assisting RN/MD in removal of sheath and applying manual pressure or c-clamp after hemostasis has been established.
  • Observing sheath site for signs of bleeding and notifying RN of any changes.
  • Providing clerical duties as needed.
  • Applying simple dressings and assisting RN with more complex dressings.
  • Performing blood glucose monitoring.
  • Performing hemostasis monitoring test.
  • Performing intake and output measurements.
  • Performing calorie counts.
  • Performing ostomy care.
  • Administering medications in a safe manner.
  • Providing peripheral intravenous site care and discontinuing peripheral intravenous therapy.
  • Collaborating with the RN in developing, implementing, and evaluation of the outcomes of the teaching plan.
  • Delegating appropriately to non-licensed staff.
  • Using resources in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Participating in peer review.
  • Participating in developing other staff and affiliating students.
  • Maintaining and developing own professional competencies.
