About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system! Pay rate of $20.39 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Hwy Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills. In this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service, an additional $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service. Requirements

• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections (for Technician II).
• Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment (for Technician II).
• Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program.
• Knowledge of standards and specifications used for various types of projects.
• Knowledge of instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work.
• Knowledge of all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other.
• Knowledge of surveying and testing techniques.
• Skill in calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry.
• Skill in applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques.
• Skill in using personal computers/laptops and associated applications and software, including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
• Skill in using technical engineering equipment and instruments during assigned projects.
• Ability to interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships.
• Ability to prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records.
• Ability to maintain surveying, testing, and inspection instruments and equipment.
• Ability to lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to communicate with others in-person, and by telephone, radio, and email.
• Ability to interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications.
• Ability to plan, schedule, and lead the work of coworkers during assigned projects.
• Ability to apply construction procedures in agency construction manuals and directives.
• Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.
• Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes of notifications under normal conditions.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
• Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
• Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software.
• Passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses.

Responsibilities

• Field inspection of heavy highway construction projects.
• Perform materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials, as required.
• Verify the contractors' work is completed in accordance with the project plans and specifications.
• Routinely read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications.
• Record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor, as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day.
• Utilize computers and various programs daily for maintaining official records digitally.
• Perform various survey tasks, utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment.
• Work both as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
• Assist with snow removal on highways and may be required to operate snowplows during winter weather events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
