Position Overview: Asheville Humane Society is expanding our high-volume, high-quality (HVHQ) spay/neuter program to six days per week and is seeking an experienced Contract Spay/Neuter Surgeon to join our established surgical team. We are specifically seeking a veterinarian available to work Saturdays. This role is entirely focused on efficient, safe, high-quality surgical care for shelter pets, public pets, and community cats. You will join a collaborative surgical team that includes an experienced HVHQ S/N surgeon and our Medical Director, ensuring shared support, consistent protocols, and a positive, team-centered workflow.

Requirements

  • DVM or VMD degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • Active North Carolina veterinary license (or eligibility to obtain one).
  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Demonstrated proficiency and efficiency in HVHQ spay/neuter surgery.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to support a positive team culture.
  • Passion for animal welfare and the mission of accessible, high-quality care.
  • Willingness to provide guidance and support to veterinary assistants/technicians as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform up to 25 spay/neuter surgeries on cats and dogs (public and shelter) in a fast-paced mobile medical unit environment.
  • Embrace safe and efficient anesthetic and surgical techniques aligned with best-practice HVHQ standards.
  • Provide compassionate pre- and post-operative care, monitoring patients closely to ensure comfort and safety.
  • Collaborate with a skilled, organized, and caring surgical team.
  • Maintain accurate surgical and medical records.
  • Engage with clients, fostering trust and positive experiences.
  • Partner with the Medical Director to strengthen protocols and ensure continuous program improvement.
  • Opportunity to add soft tissue surgeries for shelter pets if desired.
