About The Position

The City of Dallas is seeking an HVAC Technician III to install, maintain, and repair complex refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. This role involves leading and transferring knowledge to ensure comfortable climate control in City of Dallas facilities. The HVAC Technician III will troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, and install complex commercial and/or residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or refrigeration equipment, serve as a lead for Technicians I and II, and act as a backup to the Supervisor.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Five (5) years of experience working with air conditioning, heating and/or refrigeration repair, of which three (3) years working with five (5) ton (or above) systems.
Must have a valid driver's license with good driving record.
Must possess Environmental Protection Agency Certification (EPA – 608 Universal Certification).
Expert knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, equipment, and repair tools.
Advanced ability to operate hand and portable power tools used in the installation and repair of HVAC systems.
Expertise in reading, writing, and comprehending technical descriptions and plans.
Advanced knowledge of electrical and mechanical codes related to HVAC installation and repairs.
Ability to understand and follow complex written and verbal instructions.
Ability to develop written instructions and train more junior Technicians.
Skill in leading a team and maintaining effective relationships.
Completed Vocational Program and four (4) years of relevant experience, in addition to the EPA Certificate will meet the education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

Performs mechanical labor, repair, and maintenance work for City of Dallas HVAC equipment and related systems; performs mechanical, technical, and general manual labor to ensure safe and comfortable environment for City buildings and structures.
Troubleshoots, evaluates, and checks electrical components and pneumatic controls on HVAC refrigeration equipment to assist experienced mechanics in making repairs; identifies concerns, determines repairs, and ensures quality work completion.
Performs non-routine preventive and maintenance work on HVAC and refrigeration equipment to maintain service level in city buildings; checks drain lines, clears pipes, and makes necessary repairs; recovers refrigerant in compliance with federal regulations; repairs and replaces electric motors and starters.
Installs and repairs small electric motors used in forced air systems; installs and repairs drinking fountains, refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, etc.; provides mechanical help and insight to address malfunctioning components.
Trains HVAC Apprentices, Technicians I and II, serves as a lead on complex HVAC projects, and ensures all repair and maintenance assignments are performed in a safe and efficient manner; responds to "hot and cold calls" in emergency situations, adjusts building temperature for tenants, and performs jobs that require elevated expertise, escalates when necessary.
Requests and maintains records of work orders, oversees timesheets, etc. to document work progress; monitors supplies and equipment, makes purchases, and works with various individuals to determine needs.
Serves as a backup to Supervisor in his/her absence.
Performs other trades work as needed or assigned.
