HVAC/Refrigeration Master Mechanic
About The Position
This is an Advanced Journeyman position in LSU’s HVAC department. The role requires basic skills in maintaining complex HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including preventive maintenance. The position may also involve on-call and emergency work when required. The mechanic works independently with minimal supervision to investigate and make advanced repairs to building heating and air conditioning systems and related mechanical equipment. The role also includes working alongside other Advanced Journeymen to troubleshoot and repair control systems, assisting with training mechanics and apprentices, and occasionally overseeing their work.
Requirements
- Three years of experience installing and/or maintaining heating, ventilating, or air conditioning systems.
- Valid driver's license.
- EPA Certification.
Responsibilities
- Overhaul large HVAC and refrigeration equipment and large walk-in food coolers and freezers.
- Perform preventive maintenance, including changing and adjusting belts, changing air filters, and servicing equipment with lubricants and chemicals.
- Independently investigate and make advanced repairs to building heating and air conditioning systems and related mechanical equipment, such as freezers and fans.
- Recharge air conditioning systems with the proper amount of lubricant and refrigerant.
- Perform air balancing in HVAC distribution systems.
- Install, replace, adjust, and calibrate major refrigeration-unit components, including compressors, condensers, expansion valves, service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.
- Overhaul and repair pumps, motors, control systems, piping, and other equipment used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Work with other Advanced Journeymen to troubleshoot and repair control systems.
- Assist in training HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanics and apprentices, and occasionally oversee their work.
- Perform other duties assigned by the department, including on-call and emergency work when required.
