About The Position

The Commercial HVAC Service Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the commercial service operation, including technician performance, service delivery, customer satisfaction, financial results, and operational execution. This role ensures service work is delivered safely, efficiently, profitably, and in accordance with company standards, customer agreements, and regulatory requirements. The Service Manager provides day-to-day leadership to service technicians and service coordination staff, drives accountability for performance metrics, and serves as a key liaison between customers, field teams, project operations, and leadership.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial HVAC service, including supervisory or management responsibility
  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, diagnostics, and controls integration
  • Demonstrated experience leading technicians and developing apprentices or junior technicians
  • Familiarity with licensing, apprenticeship, and workforce development requirements
  • Working knowledge of service billing models, service agreements, and preventive maintenance programs
  • Experience with service management software (ServiceTitan strongly preferred)
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and support the commercial HVAC service team, including journeymen technicians, apprentices, service coordinators, and support staff
  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for service technicians and apprentices
  • Oversee daily service operations, including scheduling, dispatch, emergency response, and workload balancing
  • Ensure service calls, preventive maintenance, and service agreements are executed according to scope, response commitments, and safety standards
  • Conduct regular ride-alongs, job reviews, and quality inspections to ensure technical excellence and customer satisfaction
  • Supervise and develop HVAC apprentices, ensuring work assignments align with skill level, training requirements, and licensing regulations
  • Partner with field supervisors and senior technicians to provide mentoring, coaching, and hands-on training for apprentices
  • Ensure apprentices accurately log required work hours and skills in support of licensing and apprenticeship program requirements
  • Support classroom and on-the-job training coordination in alignment with company apprenticeship programs, unions (if applicable), and state requirements
  • Evaluate apprentice performance, provide feedback, and support progression toward journeyman status
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of service technicians and apprentices
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement
  • Serve as a primary escalation point for customer concerns, service issues, and technical challenges
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key commercial customers and property managers
  • Support service agreement compliance, renewals, and customer retention efforts
  • Oversee service financial performance, including labor utilization, overtime management, margins, and cost recovery
  • Review service tickets for accuracy, scope compliance, apprentice labor allocation, and billability prior to invoicing
  • Partner with accounting and operations leadership to ensure timely, accurate invoicing and cash flow
  • Monitor and control service-related costs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, and rentals
  • Ensure preventive maintenance programs are scheduled, completed, and documented per contractual and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate warranty work, callbacks, and follow-up service to reduce rework and repeat issues
  • Maintain accurate service documentation, work orders, and system data in the service management platform (e.g., ServiceTitan or equivalent)
  • Enforce compliance with OSHA, company safety policies, licensing rules, and applicable mechanical and electrical codes
  • Support permitting, inspection coordination, and AHJ requirements related to service work
  • Track service KPIs, including apprentice productivity and development metrics, and implement corrective actions as needed
  • Contribute to service department planning, workforce development strategy, and continuous process improvement initiatives
