About The Position

The IUOE Local 39 Stationary Engineer Apprentice position is a four-year, paid on-the-job and classroom training program focused on operating, maintaining, and repairing complex mechanical and electrical building systems. Although this role centers on HVAC operations, comprehensive engineering responsibilities will be taught, executed, and mastered. Requirements

  • Commitment to completing a 4-year term of combined full-time employment and outside classroom instruction through the Local 39 Training Department or a designated community college.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of program entry.
  • High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) credential, or California High School Proficiency Certificate.
  • Valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass standard pre-employment background checks and drug screenings.
  • Strong motivation to learn comprehensive mechanical and electrical building systems, showing an eagerness to grow within the engineering field.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and mechanical or electrical concepts.
  • Previous experience in a maintenance, trade, or hands-on labor role, though not required.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative attitude to work effectively within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail when examining complex mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and a desire to maintain a secure working environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and service boilers, HVAC units, refrigeration systems, air handlers, and water pumps to ensure peak operational efficiency.
  • Perform routine repairs, including filter changes, temperature adjustments, belt replacements, and basic plumbing or electrical troubleshooting.
  • Read gauges, check digital control panels, and assist with computerized building management systems (BMS) to monitor facility operations.
  • Handle plant upkeep tasks, such as lubricating equipment, cleaning filter beds, and completing preventative and reactive maintenance assignments.
  • Collaborate with journey-level engineers on complex troubleshooting and repair tasks, embracing a team-first mindset.
  • Participate actively in both on-the-job tasks and outside classroom instruction to master comprehensive engineering responsibilities.
  • Maintain safe and clean workspaces, adhering strictly to all safety protocols and guidelines.
