About The Position

The HVAC Pipe Fitter is responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems, fixtures, and HVAC systems used for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. This role requires technical expertise in working with a variety of piping materials such as copper, steel, and plastic, and ensuring the proper flow of fluids and gases necessary for HVAC systems to operate efficiently. The HVAC Pipe Fitter must be able to read blueprints, follow safety protocols, and collaborate with other construction professionals to complete installations to specification.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or vocational training in pipe fitting or HVAC systems preferred.
  • Certifications such as EPA Refrigerant Certification, OSHA 10/30 safety certification, or a journeyman pipe fitting license are highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a pipe fitter in the HVAC or mechanical industry.
  • Experience with commercial, industrial, and residential HVAC installations preferred.
  • Familiarity with piping systems for chilled water, refrigerant, and steam.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, including fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with copper piping and Uponor PEX piping.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to operate pipe fitting tools and equipment, including welders, cutters, and threading machines.
  • Knowledge of piping materials and installation methods such as welding, soldering, brazing, and threading.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials and equipment (often over 50 pounds).
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces, on ladders, and at heights.
  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor conditions and physically demanding environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC system controls and automation.
  • Experience with energy-efficient piping systems or LEED-certified projects.
  • Familiarity with building codes and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Piping System Installation
  • Assemble and install HVAC piping systems, including chilled water, steam, refrigerant, and hot water systems.
  • Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipes using tools such as pipe cutters, threading machines, and welding equipment.
  • Join pipes using various methods, including welding, brazing, threading, and soldering.
  • Blueprint & Specification Interpretation
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders to determine the layout of piping systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to clarify design requirements and ensure compliance with plans.
  • Lay out, mark, and prepare piping routes in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Testing & Inspection
  • Perform pressure testing of piping systems to ensure proper installation and absence of leaks.
  • Inspect systems for functionality and compliance with safety standards and building codes.
  • Identify and correct defects, blockages, or issues that could affect system performance.
  • Maintenance & Repair
  • Maintain and repair existing HVAC piping systems, including identifying faults and replacing defective components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to prolong system lifespan and ensure efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC systems, diagnosing issues related to piping and fluid or gas flow.
  • Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all piping work adheres to local, state, and federal safety regulations and building codes.
  • Follow proper safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify hazards and follow safety protocols for confined spaces and pressurized systems.
  • Coordination & Collaboration
  • Work closely with HVAC technicians, electricians, and other trades to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and clients regarding progress and challenges.
  • Provide guidance and support to apprentices or junior pipe fitters as needed.
