About The Position

This is a Must Progress position where the employee must participate in the HVAC FaSTPath Program and meet the requirements to progress to HVAC Levels III and IV. Training will be provided. The role involves installing, operating, repairing, and preventively maintaining pneumatic/electric air conditioning (A/C) equipment. This includes servicing and refurbishing all types of A/C and refrigeration equipment, along with their control systems. The position requires troubleshooting field-connected devices using network computers, repairing or replacing various components, and performing preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment. The role also includes balancing HVAC systems, recharging and recovering refrigerants, and supporting HVAC construction projects. Additionally, the HVAC Mechanic II will mentor and train lower-level technicians, enter maintenance data into the work order system, maintain the EPA Refrigerant Recovery Journal, and provide support services to other trades. The role also entails initiating purchases of materials and parts, cleaning and maintaining shop areas, and operating state/UF vehicles. A valid Florida driver license is required. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor may be performed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of two years (or equivalent) of an HVAC apprenticeship program or two years of appropriate experience.
  • Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Must participate in the HVAC FaSTPath Program and meet the requirements to progress to HVAC Levels III and IV.
  • Valid Florida driver license required.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery TYPE II Certification
  • 3 Years of experience
  • Knowledge of the most modern and improved materials and techniques
  • Working knowledge of blueprints and schematic drawings
  • Skilled in troubleshooting pneumatic and electric/digital devices related to refrigeration and A/C equipment
  • Skilled in using normal and up-to-date equipment and materials
  • Skilled in soldering refrigerant and water piping/tubing
  • Skilled in recovering refrigerant
  • Ability to follow established safety practices and procedures
  • Demonstrable ability to recognize the proper materials/equipment needed for a specific job and make necessary changes
  • Demonstrable ability to read a service request
  • Ability to read work requests
  • Ability to drive or walk to customer/trouble locations
  • Ability to move or lift weights, such as ladders, tools, and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, and similar places
  • Ability to wear appropriate safety equipment

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, repair, and preventively maintain pneumatic/electric air conditioning (A/C) equipment.
  • Service and refurbish all types of A/C and refrigeration equipment, including controls systems.
  • Troubleshoot field-connected devices (including unitary controllers, variable air volume (VAV) controllers, electronic and pneumatic thermostats, and control programs) with network computers.
  • Repair or replace valves, piping, thermostats, dampers, grills, turning vanes, motors, belts, and controls.
  • Preventively maintain HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Balance HVAC systems.
  • Recharge and recover refrigerants in A/C systems.
  • Perform and support HVAC construction projects and departmental jobs.
  • Mentor and train lower-level technicians.
  • Enter maintenance data via the work order system for work requests (WR) and time.
  • Maintain EPA Refrigerant Recovery Journal.
  • Provide support services to other trades as may be required for the timely and efficient repair of buildings and/or equipment.
  • Initiate purchases of materials and parts used for repairs.
  • Clean and maintain shop, work areas, and personal equipment.
  • Operate state/UF vehicle(s).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
