About The Position

The HVAC Maintenance supports the mission and daily operations of John A. Logan College by performing specialized maintenance, inspection, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems to ensure campus facilities remain safe, functional, and service-ready. This position is responsible for maintaining the operational integrity, efficiency, and reliability of HVAC and related mechanical systems across College facilities, contributing directly to a comfortable learning and working environment for students, employees, and visitors. The HVAC Maintenance Technician performs skilled trade work within established procedures and specifications and collaborates with other Facilities staff to support overall building operations and preventative maintenance efforts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing HVAC maintenance, repair, or related mechanical systems work in a commercial, institutional, industrial, or similar facilities environment.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe).
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work overtime, evenings, or weekends as assigned to support College operations and emergency needs.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions related to HVAC systems, safety procedures, and equipment use.
  • Knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems and components commonly used in institutional or commercial facilities.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and procedures applicable to HVAC and related mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, equipment operation standards, and hazard recognition applicable to HVAC and facilities maintenance work.
  • Skill in performing routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on HVAC systems and components using appropriate tools, equipment, and testing instruments.
  • Skill in interpreting work orders, technical manuals, schematics, and specifications to complete HVAC maintenance tasks safely and correctly.
  • Skill in maintaining accurate records that support maintenance tracking, compliance, and continuity of operations.
  • Skill in coordinating work activities with Facilities staff and providing clear work status updates using available communication methods.
  • Ability to troubleshoot HVAC system issues and perform maintenance and repair activities in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team while prioritizing tasks to meet operational needs.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and properly use tools, equipment, and materials associated with HVAC maintenance work.
  • Ability to learn new equipment, procedures, and safety requirements and apply them consistently to daily work.
  • Ability to assist across Facilities functions (maintenance, custodial, grounds, or event support) based on operational priorities when assigned.

  • Uses tools, equipment, materials, and chemicals safely and reports hazards or unsafe conditions promptly.
  • Completes assigned HVAC maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repair tasks dependably to support continuous facility operations.
  • Demonstrates accountability for work assignments, tools, equipment, and required documentation.
  • Applies sound judgment and practical problem-solving skills to identify and address routine HVAC system issues within established procedures.
  • Recognizes when issues require assistance, escalation, or coordination with other Facilities staff.
  • Performs HVAC inspections, repairs, and system checks accurately and thoroughly to meet College standards.

  • Organizes and prioritizes work to respond effectively to service requests, preventative maintenance schedules, and operational needs.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisors and Facilities colleagues and communicates clearly regarding work status, system issues, and maintenance needs.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, inspect, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems—including boilers, chillers, air handlers, air distribution, temperature control components, motors, pumps, and related mechanical equipment—to ensure campus facilities remain safe, functional, and service-ready.
  • Perform routine and periodic preventative maintenance on HVAC and related mechanical systems and equipment to support system reliability, efficiency, and continuity of College operations.
  • Diagnose HVAC system and equipment issues and perform repairs or corrective maintenance in accordance with established procedures, manufacturer specifications, and safety standards.
  • Monitor system performance and respond to service requests, alarms, or emergency maintenance needs to support comfortable and safe learning and working environments.
  • Document system operation, inspections, maintenance, and repair activities by completing required daily work logs and preventative maintenance records.
  • Operate hand and power tools, testing equipment, and related instruments safely and correctly when performing HVAC maintenance and repair work.
  • Coordinate work activities with other Facilities staff to support overall building operations and timely resolution of maintenance issues.
  • Follow written instructions, technical manuals, schematics, and safety procedures related to HVAC systems, equipment, tools, materials, and chemicals.
  • Participate in required training programs to maintain knowledge of HVAC systems, safety practices, and operational procedures.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by the supervisor in support of Facilities and College operations.
  • Assist with special projects, event support, or operational tasks outside routine HVAC maintenance assignments as needed.
