About The Position

The Journeyperson – Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A) is responsible for the installation and commissioning of commercial, institutional, and industrial refrigeration, air conditioning, and natural gas systems. The role includes reading and interpreting blueprints, assembling and testing equipment, and ensuring all installations meet safety and code requirements. This position is ideal for an experienced tradesperson with a strong background in refrigeration and gas piping installation who is committed to quality, safety, and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) – 313A Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (Journeyperson).
  • Gas Technician License – G1 preferred, G2 accepted.
  • This position is governed by a collective agreement. Candidates must be members in good standing with Local 787, or willing and eligible to join upon hire.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial or industrial refrigeration and/or gas piping construction.
  • Familiarity with gas line installation, pressure testing, and code requirements.
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and efficiently as part of a coordinated construction team.
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration and gas systems, including installation, brazing, and commissioning practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Skilled in brazing, soldering, leak detection, and pressure testing.
  • Knowledge of mechanical codes, safety regulations, and refrigerant/gas handling standards.
  • Proficient with hand and power tools used in HVAC and gas piping installation.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to work in active construction environments with exposure to noise, dust, and varying weather conditions.
  • Regular climbing, lifting, standing, and working at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Manual dexterity required for brazing, soldering, and handling mechanical tools and materials.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Occasional extended hours or shift work to meet project deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Install, assemble, and test refrigeration, air conditioning, and natural gas piping systems in accordance with project specifications and applicable codes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics to plan layouts and determine material and equipment requirements.
  • Perform brazing, soldering, and pressure testing to verify system integrity and code compliance.
  • Install refrigeration lines, piping supports, valves, controls, sensors, and insulation.
  • Ensure compliance with TSSA, CSA, and company standards for gas line installation, pressure testing, and safety.
  • Assist with system start-up, charging, leak testing, and commissioning.
  • Support troubleshooting and maintenance activities during construction and project turnover.
  • Coordinate with other trades to ensure efficient, conflict-free installation and adherence to construction schedules.
  • Maintain accurate installation documentation, including test results, material tracking, and as-built records.
  • Mentor and guide apprentices on safe work practices, installation techniques, and quality workmanship.
  • Participate actively in the company’s health and safety program, adhering to all safety policies and site procedures.
