About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position is field based/remote, specifically in the Western Region of NC servicing the far west region of the state. Counties that this position will primarily be servicing: Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Macon, Swain, Jackson, Haywood, Madison, Buncombe, Henderson, Yancey, Avery Mitchell, McDowell, Polk, Rutherford, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, Catawba, Lincoln, Cleveland, Gaston, and Mecklenburg. Clinical Support Services Receive referrals from peer support units, NC EAP, and other DAC stakeholders. Deliver evidence‑based mental health interventions for individuals, couples, and groups, tailored to corrections professionals. Provide holistic wellness coaching, consultation, and case management with emphasis on trauma and stress recovery. Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation, ensure confidentiality, and manage record releases. Provide triage, urgent consultation, and care recommendations, including referrals to external providers. Maintain a schedule including traditional and alternative hours per HSPM II direction. Deploy as needed for major workplace or critical incidents, including natural disasters, with expected day and overnight travel. Training & Presentation Deliver mental health training for DAC staff. Develop and present responsive programming on wellness, suicide prevention, stress management, trauma recovery, mental health literacy, and stigma reduction. Support peer support units by providing individual and group crisis and critical‑incident interventions, including afterhours response. Contribute to SHIELD career progression by providing clinical supervision to interns and provisionally licensed staff as directed. Provide administrative supervision for master’s‑level interns and trainees. Conduct in‑service training on evidence‑based practices, mental health interventions, HIPAA compliance, ethics, and state law. Participate in afterhours critical‑incident response at NCDAC worksites in coordination with SHIELD’s Peer Support Unit. About SHIELD The S.H.I.E.L.D. section exists to improve the overall health and performance of the correctional workforce by providing confidential, non-emergent support services to DAC staff. These include a combination of behavioral health and peer support initiatives focused on wellness to enhance professional and personal success.

Requirements

Master's degree in the area of assignment from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in a closely related program; OR Bachelor's degree in the area of assignment field from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in a closely related program; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensed, or license eligible to practice in NC as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Supervisor, or Associate (LCMHC, LCMHCS, or LCMHCA); Licensed Clinician Social Worker, or Associate (LCSW or LCSW-A); Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Associate (LMFT or LMFT-A); Licensed Psychologist, or Associate (LPA)

Nice To Haves

Delivering counseling for complex trauma & chronic stress to corrections professionals, healthcare staff, and first responders.
Experience delivering counseling to individuals, groups, and couples.
Knowledge of clinical ethics and compliance laws, case management, and clinical documentation.
Development and presentation of training to peers, at DAC conferences, and to facility staff.
