About The Position

Smythe LLP is seeking an experienced and well-rounded HR professional to join the firm on a part-time, Monday-to-Friday, flexible 25-hour-per-week maternity leave contract. This role will act as a trusted partner to Partners and senior leaders, providing day-to-day HR support and guidance across a broad range of people matters. The successful candidate will oversee core HR operations, including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and leadership support within a professional services environment. This individual will play a key role in maintaining a strong employee experience, supporting leaders in managing their teams, and ensuring the smooth delivery of HR programs and processes across the firm. The level of the role (Manager or Senior Manager) will be determined based on the experience and capabilities of the successful candidate. The HR Manager / Senior HR Manager is a part-time (3–4 days per week) maternity leave coverage role that plays an important leadership function in supporting Smythe’s people priorities. Reporting to the HR Partner, this position provides oversight of core HR operations and works closely with Partners and business leaders to support effective day-to-day people management across the firm. In this role, the successful candidate will lead key HR functions, including employee relations, recruitment, performance management, and HR operations. The focus is on maintaining a strong employee experience, supporting leaders and teams, and ensuring consistent and effective HR practices across the organization.

Requirements

  • 5–8+ years of progressive P&C experience, ideally in a Manager or Senior People & Culture capacity
  • Strong, well-rounded knowledge across HR disciplines (employee relations, recruitment, HR operations)
  • Strong knowledge of the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and applicable employment legislation, with the ability to interpret and apply requirements confidently in day-to-day decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing recruitment and partnering with hiring managers
  • Confident handling employee relations matters independently
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and problem-solving skills
  • Tech-savvy and adaptable, with experience using HR systems like UKG to support efficient HR operations and decision-making
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

Nice To Haves

  • HR certification (e.g., CPHR) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary HR point of contact for managers and employees, providing guidance on policies, procedures, and employee relations matters
  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues, including investigations, performance concerns, and conflict resolution
  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding processes to ensure a smooth employee experience
  • Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and employee documentation
  • Ensure compliance with employment standards and applicable legislation
  • Support performance management processes, including reviews, feedback cycles, and documentation
  • Coach and support managers on day-to-day people management (performance, attendance, conduct, etc.)
  • Oversee HR administration, including HRIS updates, reporting, and record-keeping
  • Provide general HR support across all functions as needed in a hands-on capacity
  • Experience with full-cycle recruitment across departments, partnering closely with hiring managers to fill roles efficiently
