About The Position

This position maintains contracts, chain of custody, and curation of human remains that are part of active law enforcement cases, including those from the FBI, police departments, sheriff-coroner's departments, the Department of Defense's POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and the National Parks Service. Ensures confidentiality and security for each case. Enforces security measures for laboratory. Responsible for managing and storing Level 1 data. Provides support for undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research projects and activity. Under general direction, this position performs comprehensive support services and dispenses materials for anthropology courses, the physical anthropology teaching lab, and the Zooarchaeology, Stable Isotope Preparation, and Human Identification scientific laboratories, in the Anthropology Department. Responsibilities include ordering and obtaining supplies and equipment for laboratories and courses in biological anthropology, including anatomical specimens as well as other teaching materials. Responsible for overseeing (24-hour, seven days a week) services for pathological and biohazardous and pathological waste handling, storage, and disposal, and human and animal skeletal and tissue remains. Maintains 24/7 refrigeration units and maintains environmental controls and oversees and coordinates backup power for freezers, heaters, and ovens. Schedules and performs maintenance on equipment for the laboratory. Additionally, this position is responsible for curation of human (-1, 100) and animal remains (-2,000) and tissues as well as archaeological, historic and anthropological case specimens, and facilitates arrangements with law enforcement agencies for forensic casework. Supervises upwards of 12 graduate and undergraduate internships yearly. Works with faculty to assist in the development of new instructional offerings dependent on materials, supplies, and equipment support throughout the week. Maintains comprehensive records and prepares reports. Develops, implements, and conducts laboratory safety and operational training. Finally, the position will require active involvement in anthropological analyses in ongoing investigations and supporting case documentation including case photography, microscopic imaging, radiography and case report writing.

Requirements

Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the assigned specialty area.
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the assigned area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Must maintain a valid California Driver's License.
Must complete and comply with CSU Defensive Driving Course.
Must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083 (revised July 21, 2017) as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

Masters degree in Forensic or Biological Anthropology
At least two years of experience in a medicolegal setting such as a medical examiner office or forensic anthropology lab
Previous involvement in forensic anthropology case work and case report writing
Already completed the American Board of Forensic Anthropology Analyst exam or eligible to sit for the exam with the goal of satisfactory completion of the exam within two years of hire
