About The Position

The HSE Specialist works onsite at ABB’s Industrial C&S Arecibo Plant in Puerto Rico, contributing to improved health, safety, and environmental performance. The role supports the business with HSE expertise and solutions, helps foster a strong HSE culture, and promotes effective risk management across the ABB value chain. The position reports to the HSE Manager and works with plant operations and maintenance teams, site management and supervisors, corporate HSE leadership, and external regulatory bodies and auditors.

The role includes reporting and investigating incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions and risk mitigation measures. The HSE Specialist also supports behavioral change and performance improvement programs, monitors workplace conditions, performs facility inspections and audits, and develops training related to safety, emergency response, and environmental management. The team is described as collaborative, high-performing, and safety-driven.

Requirements

• At least 2 years of experience in HSE roles, preferably in a plant or industrial setting.
• Expertise in HSE management systems, risk assessment methodologies, and incident investigation techniques within industrial manufacturing.
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
• Fluency in English and Spanish, with strong communication skills across all levels of the organization.
• Current OSHA certifications valid in Puerto Rico.
• Meet applicable work permit or visa requirements.

Nice To Haves

• Experience as an HSE Specialist in an industrial manufacturing environment.
• Experience with ISO 14001 and 50,001 international standard certifications and PROSHA VPP Programs.
• Proficiency with SAP, Intelex, Gensuite PM-PRO, or similar HSE software.
• Passion for continuous improvement, safety culture development, and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

• Report HSE incidents to management and relevant stakeholders, and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
• Facilitate and guide incident investigations to identify root causes and implement risk mitigation strategies.
• Share feedback and lessons learned with management and employees, drawing on ABB and industry best practices.
• Support and drive behavioral change through local implementation of group-wide and business-specific HSE performance improvement programs.
• Monitor workplace conditions and recommend improvements to occupational health and safety.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and perform root cause analysis to prevent future occurrences.
• Conduct regular facility inspections and audits to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory standards.
• Develop and implement training programs related to safety practices, emergency response, and environmental management.
