About The Position

The HSE Advisor will assist the Regional HSE Manager in the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs and initiatives across the Ontario, Canada Region. The primary focus of this role will be to support projects and office locations throughout Ontario. Additionally, the HSE Advisor will be responsible for ensuring adherence to the AtkinsRéalis HSE management system and all relevant HSE legislation. Requirements

  • Certificate/Diploma and/or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in an HSE role, preferably within engineering, construction, utility, and/or industrial sectors.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining HSE management systems while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable HSE provincial and federal legislation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of internal and external HSE auditing processes, including audit planning, execution, and follow-up.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough incident investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint etc.), with the ability to create reports, presentations, and data analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • A self-starter/solution-focused individual with excellent communication, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and travel to regional offices and project sites is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certifications such as CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent are considered a strong asset.
  • Certification in HSE auditing systems such as ISO/COR are considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Define and establish HSE requirements in collaboration with the Regional HSE Manager.
  • Support the HSE Manager in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HSE programs across the Ontario-Canada Region.
  • Participate in the development of specific HSE procedures, programs and manuals.
  • Provide HSE advisory to BU/Project leaders, as well as coaching and mentoring employees for the appropriate use of HSE program tools.
  • Support HSE planning and execution, including developing and/or revising HSE plans in accordance with AtkinsRéalis and client requirements, legal obligations through site visits.
  • Develop and review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safe Work Procedures, and Practices.
  • Develop and lead toolbox talks on high risks activities (e.g., electrical hazards, human-machine interface) and/or relevant safety activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations by conducting HSE inspections and assurance activities, providing recommendations, corrective actions, and ensuring their follow-up to monitor AtkinsRealis HSE performance.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant standards, codes, and environmental requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate subcontractors' prevention programs and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a HSE focal point for key clients, ensuring clear communication, alignment with client expectations, and proactive issue resolution.
  • Deliver HSE orientations, HSE inductions, and training for project staff and its contractors.
  • Management of the training program, including orientation training for new workers, coordination of internal/external training, and development of new training materials.
  • Lead or support incident investigations and support event management processes, including root cause analysis and development of corrective and preventive actions and support in case management.
  • Provide sound guidance on the interpretation and scope of federal and provincial occupational health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Train all project staff and its sub-contractors to perform site observations and record them on EcoOnline (AtkinsRealis Cloud database), report to client and site prime contractors.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports related to HSE activities, incidents, and performance metrics.
  • Provide HSE support for regional offices and facilities management, which may include maintaining an inventory of PPE and HSE supplies, office compliance with fire code and first aid requirements; and supporting joint health and safety committees.
  • Supporting Joint Health and Safety Committees functions across the region.
  • Analyze incident trends and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
  • Stay current with Industry best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging HSE trends.
