About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking an HS Assistant Softball Coach for Schlagle High School. This role is directly responsible to the head coach and requires total loyalty to the program, the head coach, and other assistants. The assistant coach will be expected to carry out all assignments given by the head coach. The position involves assisting with coaching staff organization, managing administrative tasks related to player eligibility and injuries, equipment inventory and maintenance, record-keeping, and ensuring proper team conduct. The role also includes attending to player injuries, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and organizing practice sessions. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and organizational skills, the ability to solve practical problems, and interpret various instructions. Language skills include the ability to read and interpret professional journals, write reports, and present information effectively. The job requires the ability to perform physical tasks such as sitting, walking, standing, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds, with the possibility of visiting a child's home. The work environment is typically loud and requires ensuring students' safety, work output, and well-being. The position requires applying knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs and establishing effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or must qualify for Rule 10 approval through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture.
  • Occasionally may visit a child’s home.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
  • Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the head coach as directed with organizing and directing coaching staff.
  • Collect physical examination forms and insurance release forms.
  • Report injuries to the school nurse.
  • Take inventory and submit a list of equipment needs.
  • Check out and collect all equipment.
  • Keep accurate records and reports of lost or stolen equipment.
  • Provide a roster of players.
  • Provide the Athletic Director a list of athletes to receive awards and plan the awards ceremony.
  • Ensure proper team conduct on trips and during contests.
  • Treat injuries or attend to athletes.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and uniforms.
  • Organize practice sessions.
