About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking an HS Assistant Cross Country Coach for J.C. Harmon High School. KCKPS is a large, nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students. The district employs around 4,000 individuals, including over 1,800 teachers. The primary goal of the coach is to be responsible for all levels and phases of their sport, with the head coach overseeing the correct and timely completion of all duties.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (e.g., competition travel, meetings, practices) to ensure activities are conducted in an environment with minimal risk of injury and align with USD 500 Board of Education mission and policies.
  • Maintain a variety of records, including pre-participation physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, medical releases, activity consent forms, tryout/participation agreements, emergency contact information, schedules, equipment inventory, game/student athlete statistics, and accurate squad rosters, to comply with district, athletic conference, state, and KSHSAA requirements.
  • Verify that all necessary forms and certifications are completed before a candidate is issued equipment or allowed to practice.
  • Ensure all transfer students meet KSHSAA eligibility requirements prior to participation.
  • Ensure all participating students have purchased the required activity ticket.
  • Implement and manage practice and other schedules (e.g., facility usage, equipment, staff assignments), adhering to all school and district policies for scheduling facilities, and submitting schedules to administration.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain locker room security.
  • Report all participant injuries to proper school officials according to the coach's handbook and Board of Education policy.
  • Support and follow the recommendations of athletic trainers regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Support and conform to established decisions and policies of the school and USD 500.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain an accurate equipment inventory, enforce rules regarding equipment care, and ensure all students are accountable for equipment at the season's conclusion.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs to maintain safety and performance.
  • Maintain records of evaluation procedures and assess student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and/or determine team placement.
  • Conduct and attend supporting activities such as league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets to provide program information and recognize participants' accomplishments.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes (e.g., strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance and improve student athlete performance.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for potential hazards and inadequate equipment, and assist in making modifications or recommendations to reduce injury risk.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Guide coaching personnel in instructional techniques, practice organization, supervision guidelines, and responsibilities.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and prepare written evaluations for each coach at the conclusion of the season.
  • Advise coaching personnel, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and the importance of KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility to comply with KSHSAA and USD 500 policies.
  • Provide appropriate intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) to students needing assistance to maintain academic eligibility.
  • Report all team scores to appropriate media outlets and prepare other public information releases as needed (High School Only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
