As the HR Specialist, Immigration, you’ll play a critical role within the Duke University School of Medicine HR Service Center—supporting a diverse population of faculty, staff, and scholars while fostering an inclusive, service-oriented environment. Work Arrangement – Remote; Must reside in the State of North Carolina.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of related human resources, payroll, or administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Prior visa/immigration experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted resource on routine and complex visa and immigration matters, providing guidance and support to managers, supervisors, and administrators.
  • Interpret and apply Duke HR policies and immigration regulations, recommending best practices and ensuring compliance with University and regulatory standards.
  • Build strong partnerships across the School of Medicine, Visa Services, and other Duke offices to address personnel issues, inquiries, and special requests.
  • Provide immigration guidance by analyzing visa options based on candidate education, experience, job title, and responsibilities.
  • Act as liaison between foreign nationals, Visa Services, sponsoring departments, and other stakeholders to coordinate and oversee visa processing.
  • Manage onboarding processes, including I-9 verification, documentation review, orientation scheduling, and system setup in payroll and HR systems.
  • Accurately process HR transactions such as hires, transfers, terminations, schedule and pay changes, and position updates in alignment with established deadlines.
  • Respond to a wide range of HR and immigration inquiries with accuracy, professionalism, and a strong commitment to excellent customer service across written, verbal, and electronic communication channels.
