About The Position

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services supports individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services. DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians. This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility, located in Danville, VA. This HR Generalist/Employee Relations Consultant position's primary role is to serve as the subject matter expert and strategic leader for employee relations, workplace investigations, grievance administration, policy interpretation, compliance, and organizational learning initiatives. This position provides consultation to supervisors and employees by providing coaching and training to strengthen leadership practices, improve employee performance, enhance workplace communication, and promote effective working relationships. This position provides backup coverage for the HR Generalist/Recruiter and HR Generalist/Benefits Coordinator to provide cross coverage across the Human Resources Department.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of human resource programs, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, regulations and policies to include but not limited to FMLA, ADA, and FLSA.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability of significant attention to detail in performing work with a high degree of accuracy, especially related to written documentation including investigative reports.
  • Extensive experience using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to plan and accomplish tasks in carrying out tasks within policy guidelines.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle complex, sensitive situations, information and documentation in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Strong skills in organization and prioritization with demonstrated ability to multi-task efficiently.
  • Skilled in providing policy interpretation and guidance.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of human resources systems specific to the Commonwealth of Virginia such as Cardinal HCM, PageUp, and related HR programs or the ability to learn this information.
  • Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia grievance procedures, best practices in corrective/disciplinary action and alternative dispute resolution techniques.
  • Experience with employee relations to include progressive discipline, performance management, and conducting investigations.
  • Advanced coursework (or degree) in Human Resources or related field.
  • Prior experience working in a health care environment in personnel management or other related field.
