About The Position

As the HR Generalist you will play an integral role in all facets of front-line HR support and leadership for Applegreen Travel Plazas across Connecticut, for both union and non-union employees. Reporting to the Regional HR Business Partner, and building close partnerships at all levels, this position takes the lead with ER investigations, Union grievances, coaching and counseling, staffing initiatives, and other culture building activities both internally and externally. A primary focus will be placed on timely employee relations, including ensuring interactive processes, thorough documentation practices, and enabling productive, inclusive, and fair workplaces. In partnership with the Regional HRBP, the HR Generalist will also function as the subject matter expert, with accountability for maintaining all state and local compliance initiatives and building professional coaching credibility.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of Human Resources experience including employee relations and labor law.
  • Knowledge of employment laws including ADA, FLSA, FMLA
  • Experience in retail and/or the food and beverage industry a plus.
  • Passion for resolving peoples problems.
  • Ability to mediate tense situations and manage disputes between employees, supervisors and union representatives.
  • Adaptable, flexible, and motivated to drive results.
  • Expert in time management and attention to detail; prioritizing/organizing and meeting deadlines of multiple projects in a very fast paced environment.
  • Effective communication - written, verbal and listening skills.
  • Ability to present information in a clear and concise manner (verbally and in writing) to ensure others understand ideas; adapt message, style, and tone to base on audience.
  • Objective, approachable and able to interact effectively with all levels of employees both in person and in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Able to work with all levels of the team, including senior leader.
  • High level of personal integrity; ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.

  • Comfortable working with applicant tracking systems, MS Office (PPT, Word, Excel ADP knowledge is an advantage, Excel knowledge required.
  • Bachelors degree in a related field of study, or equivalent directly related work experience.
  • Willingness to travel as needed (reliable transportation/drivers license required)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ER risk & compliance assessments for locations and partner with Regional HRBP to implement proactive site-specific strategies and action plans to improve results.
  • Conduct thorough in-person investigations of employee grievances and provide recommended actions based on findings, including more complex matters such as allegations of harassment, workplace violence, discrimination, retaliation, and employee misconduct.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, balancing employee advocacy with contractual compliance.
  • Foster a positive working relationship with Union Stewards and Representatives.
  • Ensure timely follow-up, progress, and completion of corrective actions flowing internal investigations.
  • Maintain accurate records for union members, including seniority lists, disciplinary actions and grievance documentation.
  • With Regional HRBP, oversee implementation of action plans stemming from site-specific people trends, compliance opportunities, and employee engagement survey results.
  • Complete and track management exit interviews (1x1) and hourly exit interviews (automated)
  • Build and maintain weekly people tracking and monthly reports, identifying trends and actions.
  • Leverage resources and proactively collaborate with senior HR team partners to ensure the applicable policies, training and risk mitigation strategies are in place to support company mission, values, and policies.
  • Post job openings, screen applicants, conduct interviews and manage hiring process.
  • Assist in onboarding process.
