About The Position

As a critical member of Ursa Major’s Digital Operations team, the HPC Systems Engineer reports to the IT Manager and has a dual mandate: expanding the company’s High-Performance Computing simulation clusters and serving as IT’s core Enterprise Linux Subject Matter Expert. The role owns HPC infrastructure that supports solids, liquids, thermal, and structural analysis teams, helping them run complex CFD/FEA workloads faster and at greater scale. The engineer partners with IT, DevOps, and Zero-Trust Networking to architect, automate, and harden enterprise Linux servers across facilities in Colorado and Ohio. The position is hybrid, with a primary location at the Longmont, Colorado office, periodic support at the Berthoud facility and Denver Tech Center data center colocation, and ongoing support for Ohio facilities.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of dedicated experience in Linux systems engineering and infrastructure administration.
  • Hands-on mastery of enterprise Linux distributions such as RHEL, Rocky Linux, or Ubuntu Server, including kernel tuning, storage management, and network configuration.
  • Demonstrated experience building, managing, or scaling HPC clusters, job schedulers such as Slurm or PBS, and distributed MPI/GPU environments.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, Bash, and Ansible or Terraform for infrastructure automation.
  • Practical understanding of system hardening, vulnerability patching, and security controls in CMMC, NIST SP 800-171, DoD, or similar regulated compliance frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity supporting engineering simulation platforms such as ANSYS Fluent/Mechanical, Siemens STAR-CCM+, Abaqus, or MATLAB.
  • Experience configuring InfiniBand/RoCE fabrics, high-performance parallel file systems, and NVIDIA GPU clusters.
  • Experience with enterprise hypervisor clusters such as VMware vSphere.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, expand, and optimize Linux-based HPC clusters, storage systems, and compute nodes supporting propulsion analysis.
  • Administer job schedulers and resource managers such as Slurm and PBS to support fair-share scheduling, efficient queue utilization, and low job latency.
  • Partner with solids, liquids, thermal, and CFD analysis engineers to integrate, benchmark, and optimize simulation suites and GPU-accelerated workloads.
  • Manage high-throughput storage solutions and high-speed network fabrics to reduce data bottlenecks during parallel processing.
  • Serve as the primary systems engineer and Level 2/3 escalation point for enterprise Linux systems, hypervisors, and core IT infrastructure.
  • Automate system provisioning, configuration management, patching, and user onboarding using Ansible, Python, Bash, Terraform, and automated kickstart routines.
  • Integrate Linux servers and HPC head nodes with enterprise identity platforms for centralized authentication and role-based access control.
  • Implement and maintain system hardening, access controls, patching, and vulnerability management aligned with NIST SP 800-171, CMMC Level 2, and ITAR/CUI data protection requirements.
  • Deploy metrics, alerting, and telemetry frameworks to monitor node health, cluster temperature, memory usage, and hardware failures.
  • Maintain architectural diagrams, standard operating procedures, and system security plans for Linux and HPC environments.
