About The Position

Friends of Ruby is dedicated to supporting the well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 16-29 through mental health services, social programs, and housing. We operate a Youth Drop-In Centre, offering barrier-free counselling, hot meals, and community programming, and a Transitional Home, providing emergency and long-term housing with life-skills support. This position will support the Transitional Home. Our approach is comprehensive, involving mind, body, and community. We believe that every individual is unique, valuable, and deserving of care, and we are committed to treating everyone with dignity, respect, and inclusion. Rooted in intersectional, anti-oppressive, and decolonized approaches, our work is grounded in integrity as we build strong, collaborative relationships and strive to grow and improve together.

Requirements

  • Education or experience in social services, social sciences, or related fields.
  • 3+ years working with youth, marginalized groups, in mental health, addictions, emergency shelter or residential settings.
  • Familiarity with anti-oppressive, anti-racist, trauma-informed approaches.
  • Knowledge of Toronto Shelter Standards, SMIS, Housing First for Youth, and harm reduction models.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage high stress situations (i.e., crisis and conflict) calmly and confidently.
  • Current CPR/First-Aid training is required.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check clearance.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada.
  • Must reside in Ontario.
  • Availability for various shifts, including overnights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Training in CPI, ASIST, or UMAB.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and orient youth, providing compassionate, non-judgmental support.
  • Collaborate with youth to address goals, safety, and care plans.
  • Build connections with community partners to amplify support.
  • Support daily operations, including reception tasks, snack prep, and maintaining a clean, safe space.
  • Provide trauma-informed, harm-reduction-based care and crisis support.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and teammates to foster a positive, inclusive environment.
