About The Position

Young Community Developers (YCD) is a nonprofit organization established in 1973, serving residents of all ages in San Francisco's most underserved communities. YCD employs a holistic approach through a service ecosystem designed to empower residents towards economic mobility, fostering positive community development via education, workforce training, and social services. YCD's mission is to ensure every individual has the right to sustainable, generational economic mobility and to break the cycle of poverty. Annually, YCD assists approximately 1,200 community members with employment and training services. This Housing Specialist role is part of a project to address the affordable housing crisis in San Francisco, with a focus on the Southeast Sector, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Housing Team seeks to hire a Housing Specialist to provide direct services and administration for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) and Rental Housing Counseling (RHC). This position will work directly with low-income tenant households at risk of homelessness, eviction, displacement, and housing instability. The Housing Specialist is responsible for deploying vital housing assistance to address the housing crisis in San Francisco, particularly in the Southeast Sector. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, this field-based role involves direct client contact to ensure households receive appropriate wrap-around services and financial assistance based on their needs. Key functions include client intake, engagement, case management, referrals, community outreach, landlord engagement, and processing ERAP and RHC applications.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. degree in a related field OR at least 3 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Cantonese or English and Spanish will receive a bilingual pay differential of 8%.
  • Ability to meet the needs of the community by working non-traditional hours as needed, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and the ability and willingness to work with economically and culturally diverse clientele from various professional and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written communications, patience, diplomacy, and high-level customer service skills.
  • Ability to think critically, problem-solve, and be resourceful.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be comfortable with and adapt quickly to organizational, program, and departmental changes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a moderate caseload of 20-30 ERAP and RHC clients per week, guiding them through the City's requirements and application process.
  • Verify client documentation and maintain case notes.
  • Process clients in need of housing assistance through ERAP and RHC.
  • Make appropriate referrals to internal and external resources based on client assessments.
  • Enter case notes and documentation using Salesforce, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and other technology platforms as directed by grant contracts.
  • Engage with landlords regarding ERAP and RHC requirements.
  • Maintain data quality assurance in funder and internal platforms, ensuring documentation, case notes, and general compliance with data requirements stated in grant contracts.
  • Assist in preparation for program audits and monitoring visits.
  • Demonstrate understanding of compliance with agency, funder, and governmental reporting requirements.
  • Participate in regular team, agency, funder, and community meetings/outreach.
  • Uphold YCD's mission to break the cycle of generational poverty for communities of color through daily tasks.
  • Support YCD's growth and evolving nature to best serve the community.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
