About The Position

The City of Auburn is seeking a talented Housing Repair Technician to join their team. This role involves a variety of hands-on projects throughout the Auburn community, evaluating residential properties, identifying needed repairs, developing solutions, and completing eligible repair and maintenance work to improve the health, safety, accessibility, and quality of life for Auburn homeowners. Projects may include repairing stairs, decks, ramps, replacing flooring, repairing doors and windows, addressing weatherization, completing minor plumbing and electrical repairs, installing safety alarms, repairing roofing and exterior components, improving accessibility, and addressing other health and safety concerns. A significant portion of the work is performed on manufactured homes, offering opportunities to work with diverse construction types, materials, and building systems. The position allows for independent evaluation of problems and development of practical repair solutions. For projects requiring licensed contractors or specialized expertise, the employee may assist with scopes of work and coordination. The work directly impacts the community by helping low-income homeowners remain in safe, healthy, and affordable housing.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing residential construction, carpentry, maintenance, or home repair work.
  • Strong hands-on carpentry skills and working knowledge of common residential building systems, including basic plumbing, electrical, mechanical, roofing, flooring, doors, windows, decks, stairs, and weatherproofing.
  • Ability to inspect and evaluate residential conditions, troubleshoot problems, determine appropriate repairs, and independently complete assigned work.
  • Ability to safely and proficiently operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other equipment commonly used in residential construction and repair.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and potential environmental hazards, including suspected asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint, and follow established safety procedures.
  • Ability and willingness to properly select and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow workplace safety requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents, repair instructions, manufacturer specifications, work orders, and basic residential code requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work respectfully and professionally inside occupied residences and communicate effectively with homeowners, coworkers, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple repair projects, manage time effectively, and complete quality work with limited supervision.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate City vehicles, including vans with limited visibility, and tow, maneuver, back, and park a trailer up to 12 feet in length.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with residential construction and repair work and to work in a variety of residential environments and weather conditions.
  • High School Diploma, AND Three (3) years of equivalent work-related experience; OR The incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education, training, and experience that would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.
  • Possess and retain valid state driver’s license during tenure of employment, without impending loss at time of appointment.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid First Aid Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform residential home repairs and maintenance for participants in the City’s Housing Repair Program, with the majority of work occurring in manufactured homes.
  • Work includes carpentry, minor plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs, roofing, flooring, doors, windows, decks, stairs, weatherproofing, and other general home repairs.
  • Inspect and evaluate homes to determine needed repairs, identify health and safety concerns and potential code violations, and develop appropriate scopes of work, repair descriptions, sketches, material lists, and cost estimates.
  • Complete repairs that improve the safety and habitability of client homes, including correcting identified deficiencies, installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, performing preventative maintenance, and addressing other eligible Housing Repair Program needs.
