About The Position

The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to support the Housing and Community Development Department. This department works to provide affordable housing and foster equitable community engagement. The role is crucial in maintaining public housing units and ensuring residents have safe and functional living spaces. Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid NC Driver's License
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field OR any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the job
  • Knowledge of the operation of a wide range of hand tools and equipment in the electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing trades
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities
  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, residents, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to serve on the departmental on-call rotation
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and inclement weather, on an as-needed basis
  • Ability to model behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECT.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of practices in Federal, State, and Local building codes and safety regulations

Responsibilities

  • Completes safety inspections and preventative maintenance of public housing units.
  • Performs general maintenance of public housing units, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and appliance repairs as permissible.
  • Uses a work order system to track and prioritize maintenance requests and document completion.
  • Provides notice to residents regarding upcoming work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
