About The Position

The Housing and Residence Life Coordinator will participate as a member of the Housing and Residence Life team, whose primary purpose is to implement the guiding principles of how students live at DePauw University. This position is responsible for supporting the mission of the University, the Division of Student Affairs and the goals of the department. The Housing and Residence Life Coordinator position is a full-time, live-in appointment responsible for providing departmental support and project facilitation in the areas of supervision, administration, and community support. The primary purpose of this position is to intentionally interact with students to assess and meet student needs in multiple residential living environments, participating in educational and leadership development of student staff, as well as supporting and collaborating with other departments within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs to provide comprehensive service to students. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life and Associate Dean of Students/Director of Housing and Residence Life.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with and sensitivity to individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and a commitment to a diverse and inclusive community.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and management skills, ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously and attention to detail.
  • Experience administering systems, programs and processes.
  • Ability to work in diverse, team-oriented settings and collaborate with others.
  • Ability to function within a team environment and collaborate with others.
  • Ability to advise students, individually and in groups.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Ease in working with all University constituents, including faculty, staff, alumni, students and their families.
  • Excellent verbal, written, technological and interpersonal communication skills and ability to think critically.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and evenings as needed.
  • Understanding of and/or experience in a residential, liberal arts college environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field preferred.
  • Experience working in housing and residence life is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of healthy, inclusive residential living environments by intentionally and regularly interacting with resident students.
  • Assess the individual needs of resident students and staff as well as the needs of the community as a whole by interacting in both group and one-on-one settings concerning their campus involvement, engagement, academics, and future endeavors.
  • Serve as a student advocate and regularly solicit student feedback and communicate input to student affairs departments.
  • Display and demonstrate high levels of empathy, flexibility, open-mindedness, compassion and approachability in working with students while being familiar with campus and community resources in order to make referrals to additional campus and community resources where appropriate.
  • Promote initiatives that meet the academic and developmental needs of residential students within our residence hall communities, and all other residential living units.
  • Provide on-call coverage, responding appropriately and providing crisis intervention as well as conflict mediation for campus throughout the calendar year.
  • Be responsible for knowing the published regulations/standards of the University and appropriately confront and document alleged residential and University policy violations.
  • Assist student staff and resident students in the creation of standards for their community.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support campus-wide initiatives and serve on various University committees.
  • Lead one of the four department teams that develop training, staff recruitment and selection, programming, housing and office management.
  • Facilitate residence hall opening and closing during break periods outlined within the academic and housing calendar.
  • Assist with budget management of activity funds for social, educational, community development and other initiatives.
  • Supervise and intentionally support student staff by facilitating purposeful interactions and assist in the coordination and development of educational sessions.
  • Support the residential experience by implementing programming efforts.
  • Guide student staff in assessing and intentionally meeting student needs in order to develop inclusive, welcoming and safe communities that promote our University's culture of care and serving as an active bystander.
  • Support the recruitment, selection and training of student staff members.
  • Communicate supervisory expectations and provide recognition and accountability structures for staff members.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.
