About The Position

Bristol Farms is seeking a motivated and confident Housewares Manager to lead their Housewares Department. This role requires strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with a focus on staff development, positive morale, and effective inter-departmental collaboration. The Housewares Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the department's operations, including ordering, receiving, merchandising, inventory control, and achieving targeted profits. They will also lead by example, train staff in sales and customer service techniques, and ensure compliance with company policies and standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages.
  • Ability to add, subtract, divide, and multiply using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts to create a win-win situation.
  • Ability to analyze a variety of situations, think through to a solution, and implement the solution.
  • Regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; frequent use of hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell.

  • Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

  • Availability requirements include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional overnights.

Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for the operation of the Housewares Department, including operations, planning, directing, managing, and achieving targeted profits.
  • Directly responsible for staff development and cultivating a solid working relationship with staff.
  • Develop and instill positive morale within the Housewares Department.
  • Cultivate a working relationship with other department managers to cross-merchandise effectively.
  • Lead by example, modeling correct behavior and adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Perform all duties of the Housewares Clerk.
  • Be knowledgeable of merchandise sold in the Housewares Department to educate customers and staff on functions/use of merchandise.
  • Responsible for ordering, receiving, and merchandising all items from delivery to purchase.
  • Order merchandise or prepare requisitions to replenish stock.
  • Receive merchandise and verify against purchase order; report/document damaged and shorted merchandise.
  • Price merchandise and verify price against purchase order; report/document discrepancies.
  • Process purchase orders for implementation by the deadline.
  • Merchandise using "bold displays" and arrange merchandise to promote sales.
  • Change and/or move displays to keep merchandise fresh and appealing.
  • Clean merchandise, shelves, counters, and tables.
  • Obtain merchandise requested by customers or receive merchandise selected by customers.
  • Operate a cash register and accurately record customer transactions, including payment acceptance.
  • Balance cash register accurately.
  • Maintain inventory control, focusing on theft, shrinkage, and storage.
  • Assure low shrink and waste through proper ordering and inventory control.
  • Prepare for and manage inventory results.
  • Take customer orders for gift baskets or special orders.
  • Create custom gift baskets according to customer specifications.
  • Make bows for gift baskets by hand.
  • Obtain all items required for gift baskets, transfer merchandise from other departments, and complete appropriate paperwork.
  • Ensure custom gift baskets are accurately priced according to guidelines.
  • Write schedules fairly and objectively to meet business needs.
  • Control labor results, including overtime, under the supervision of the Store Director.
  • Supervise Housewares employees in sales, displays, gift basket assembly, receiving, price integrity, and inventory taking.
  • Ensure employee compliance with security, sales, and record-keeping procedures.
  • Adhere to department budget and coordinate sales promotions under the supervision of the Manager of Merchandising.
  • Implement and maintain all marketing programs.
  • Train Housewares employees in suggestive selling, merchandising, and customer service skills on an ongoing basis.
  • Use management-provided tools to ensure department success.
  • Communicate with the Store Director and Manager of Merchandising on all department-related issues.
  • Follow safety work standards and report safety hazards.
  • Conduct accident investigations and complete required paperwork.
  • Serve customers with a smile and willing attitude, establishing relationships for repeat business.
  • Handle customer complaints to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Meet and exceed Bristol Farms/Lazy Acres Market’s standards in design, presentation, customer service, quality, cleanliness, and leadership.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities including training, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and resolving problems.
