About The Position

The Access Center House Supervisor is an experienced Registered Nurse who is critical to the facilitation of inbound patient transfers from outside hospitals, urgent care centers, and clinics. The Access Center House Supervisor position requires critical thinking skills, an operational knowledge of the services provided by Driscoll Children’s Hospital, and the ability to act as a clinical liaison between Driscoll Children’s Hospital and referring hospitals, urgent care centers, and clinics. Responsibilities include facilitating appropriate placement of patients by planning, coordinating, and expediting patient throughput utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach and technology to collaborate with medical staff, hospital employees, and referring physicians. The Access Center House Supervisor is responsible for partnering with nursing leaders and to oversee clinical practice in their absence. The Access Center House Supervisor’s alignment in the organizational chart promotes neutrality. Interactions with families, nursing staff and nursing leaders will reinforce this position. This position requires professional phone skills, independent thinking and use of advanced web-based scheduling, registration and communication tools and techniques. The Driscoll Access Center is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, this position may be required to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as during inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Three years of nursing experience in which leadership ability has been demonstrated.
  • Current licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Certification in Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS)

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university preferred
  • Two years pediatric nursing experience preferred
  • National certification in related field
  • Completion of DCH orientation course

Responsibilities

  • Support and provide superior service via phones, email and web –based communications as a receiver and caller, while maintaining Driscoll Access Center quality and performance standards
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • In the absence of Nursing Administration, will serve as frontline hospital wide nursing administrator on site
  • Assists staff to problem solve to ensure patient care needs are met
  • Assist staff with problem solving to enhance the provision of family centered care
  • Notification of on call personnel as needed for evening, nights, and weekends
  • Collaborates with Social Work/Pastoral Services to provide family support
  • Reports any incident that seems unusual/deficient to Security and/or AOC
  • In collaboration with Nurse Directors will oversee clinical practice
  • Continuously reviews staffing needs to provide proper allocation of staffing resources while maintaining optimal utilization of staff to support patient care outcomes
  • Provides clinical practice support for staff to ensure delivery of high quality patient/family care.
  • Participates in the support and supervision of staff during evenings, nights and weekends
  • Serves as a nursing practice resource with knowledge of nursing standards, policies, & procedures
  • Collaborates with charge nurses and clinical coordinator as needed to make nursing decisions related to staff allocation
  • Supports clinical practice implementation and assists with evaluation of same to ensure practice changes occur
  • Identifies and participates in sharing best practices throughout department
  • Fosters a blame free practice climate to identify and respond to actual/potential safety issues
  • Actively participates in the leadership of the Nursing Administration to meet the goals of the department.
  • Serves on hospital committees
  • Collaborate with supervisors/staff of all departments to encourage rapid response and problem solving as needed
  • Reviews policy and procedures update from DCH and Directors
  • Reviews and contributes to the attainment of departmental and DCH goals annually.
  • Participates and contributes to team projects
  • Follows DCH and departmental COST control activities: Monitors usage of supplies and equipment to eliminate or minimize waste and/or misuse.
  • Correct and/or report unsafe, unsecured or unclean environment to director/supervisor of Environmental, Health, Facilities and/or Safety departments
  • Is knowledgeable of all regulatory issues and monitors compliance
  • Collaborates with Patient Access, Physicians, Admitting and Charge/Clinical Coordinators of all areas to ensure efficient, effective placement of patients
  • Coordinates with other agencies, hospitals and clinics on the upcoming acceptance or outgoing transfer of patients
  • Provides administrative problem solving during evenings, nights, and weekends to facilitate the smooth operation of the facility and optimal patient safety.
  • Notifies the Administrator on Call for resource problem solving and communication of events during these hours.
  • Serves in a leadership role in any emergency preparedness response
  • Responds promptly and positively to patients, families, associates, and all others in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner.
  • Greets patients, families, co-workers and others in a calm, professional, friendly manner, makes eye contact, initiates conversation, and identifies self by name
  • Provides or facilitates a clean, safe, quiet and secure environment for patients, families, and follow employees
  • Maintains identifiable/professional attire at all times, including Name Badges
  • Answers telephone calls promptly
  • Keeps self and work area neat, and organized.
  • Participates collaboratively in staff meetings, committees, projects, and teams to resolve conflicts and met Institutional goals, and strategic plan.
  • Attends staff meetings as requested
  • Identifies own learning needs and obtains necessary education to meet requirements of position.
  • Attends and completes mandatory education programs
  • Submits documentation of and reports all work related education and training
  • Reviews learning needs with director to set individual education and learning goals on an annual basis.
  • Serves as Triage Lead for all incoming Phone and Web based communications to the Driscoll Access Center
  • Achieving acceptable goals for accuracy rate on all incoming and outgoing calls, emails, eFaxes, and web based communications
  • Achieving acceptable goals for all web based registration fields
  • Achieving acceptable goals for productive hours
  • Consistently contribute to team goal of answering 90% of incoming calls within 30 seconds
  • Conducts a structured, focused interview with the patient, referring MD or referring PCP to gather information regarding the identified patient
  • Ensures standard opening and close of call is consistent with department guidelines.
