About The Position

Duke’s Division of Medical Oncology and the Duke Cancer Institute are actively recruiting for a Nocturnist Hospitalist Physician to integrate into our Medical Oncology / Solid Tumor Service. Nocturnist Hospitalist Physicians in Oncology are clinicians and/or clinician educators who provide clinical care for adult oncology patients admitted at Duke University Hospital during the overnight shift of 7pm – 7am.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited MD or DO medical school
  • Completion of Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • Board Eligible IM pending or recent graduates may apply, but otherwise American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification is required.
  • License to practice medicine issued by the NCMB
  • Federal and State DEA License

Nice To Haves

  • Hematology/Oncology Fellowship preferred, but not required
  • Board Certified in Hematology and/or Oncology is preferred, but not required.
  • Hospitalist and/or Hematology/Oncology experience preferred but welcome new grad applicants

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of inpatients during the overnight shift, including admissions and transfers.
  • Engage in direct patient care activities, including assessment, evaluation, pain and symptom management, care planning and modification, medications/therapeutic recommendations, and medical decision making.
  • Direct contact and consultation with patient family members, friends, advocates, and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans, and to encourage/support an open visitor-friendly environment within the medical/hospital environment.
  • Extensive and on-going communications with primary oncology teams who routinely manage the cancer care of patients in the outpatient setting.
  • Day-to-day patient contact/rounding/care management that actively encourages and includes professional input from all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Accurate and timely completion of all clinical and professional records and documentation to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.
  • Work to create a positive work culture within cross-departmental teams and align this work with other Oncology initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
