The Hospitalist Midwife is responsible for the day-to-day clinical running of the AMU unit. This includes prioritizing client needs, managing admission and discharge timing, communicating with community midwives, consultants, and other healthcare team members, supporting learners, planning for emergencies, reviewing outcomes, teaching, mentoring, and providing support to the midwifery team and learners. The Hospitalist Midwife plays a key role in leadership and change management within the AMU, supporting the strategic directions set by the Governance Council and the Director. They communicate and facilitate communication with the interprofessional team to ensure the best plan of care for each client. Additionally, the Hospitalist Midwife provides assistance to Labour and Delivery in various capacities, such as surgical assist, stepping into the physician role when needed, and supporting nursing staff.
