About The Position

The Hospital Transporter is responsible for safely and effectively transferring and transporting patients from patient care areas to and from diagnostic/testing areas. This role requires effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare providers. Transporters assist patients with restroom needs, safely transfer patients using approved devices, and clean transport equipment between uses. They also manage the transport, location, and redistribution of equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, and oxygen tanks, and provide directions to visitors. Maintaining current BLS certification and participating in departmental meetings and continuing education are also key aspects of the role. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED recommended.
  • Basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
  • Prior healthcare experience is not required.
  • Maintain current BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Transfer and transport patients safely and effectively from patient care areas to and from diagnostic/ testing areas (such as CT, X-ray, Angio, Hemo) and to inpatient units for admissions.
  • Communicate effectively with the patient, family, visitors, and the direct care providers.
  • Directly speak with the RN or the Healthcare Provider prior to a transport and when the patient returns to the unit.
  • Assist the patient with his/her restroom needs as necessary.
  • Safely transfer patients using a transfer device such as a patient sling, slide board, or other hospital approved transfer devices.
  • Clean transport equipment between each patient use.
  • Transport, locate, and redistribute equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, Airpals, Stryker Glides, oxygen, and other necessary equipment to perform transports.
  • Replace oxygen tanks as needed (less than 500 psi).
  • Provide directions to families and/or visitors.
  • Maintain current BLS certification.
  • Attend and participate in departmental meetings and continuing educational activities.
