About The Position

This is a part-time, evening shift position responsible for safely and effectively transferring and transporting patients. The role involves moving stable, non-monitored patients to and from diagnostic/testing areas (such as CT, X-ray, Angio, Hemo) and to inpatient units for admissions. The transporter will communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare providers, ensuring to speak with the RN or Healthcare Provider before and after each transport. Responsibilities include assisting patients with restroom needs, safely transferring patients using hospital-approved devices, cleaning transport equipment, and managing the location and redistribution of equipment like stretchers, wheelchairs, and oxygen. The role also involves replacing oxygen tanks when levels are below 500 psi, providing directions to visitors, maintaining BLS certification, participating in departmental meetings and continuing education, and fostering good working relationships. Confidentiality of patient and hospital information is paramount, and all job duties must be performed with a focus on safety, reporting any hazards or unsafe practices. Requirements

Basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Basic cardiac life support required.
High school diploma or GED recommended.

Nice To Haves

Prior Healthcare experience is not required.

Responsibilities

Transfer and transport patients safely and effectively from Patient Care Areas to and from diagnostic/ testing areas.
Transport stable, non-monitored patients from Patient Care Areas to and from diagnostic/ testing areas (such as CT, X-ray, Angio, Hemo) and to inpatient units for admissions.
Effectively communicate with the patient, family, visitors, and the direct care providers.
Directly speak with the RN or the Healthcare Provider prior to a transport and when the patient returns to the unit.
Assist the patient with his/her restroom needs as necessary.
Safely transfer patients using a transfer device such as a patient sling, slide board, or other hospital approved transfer devices.
Clean transport equipment between each patient use.
Transport, locate, and redistribute equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, Airpals, Stryker Glides, oxygen, and other necessary equipment to perform transports.
Replace oxygen tanks as needed (less than 500 psi).
Provide directions to families and/or visitors.
Maintain current BLS certification.
Attend and participate in departmental meetings and continuing educational activities.
Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approach conflict in a constructive manner. Help to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
Maintain the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discuss patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
Assume responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
