About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Safety and Security is seeking a Hospital Security Officer Supervisor. Under general supervision, this role provides administrative supervision to a large number of hospital security officers and participates in investigations and other security duties as required. The Merit Security Supervisor provides direct, frontline supervision of security officers and executes day-to-day security operations within an assigned area. This role ensures effective patrol coverage, prompt response to routine incidents, and adherence to established policies and procedures. The Merit Security Supervisor does not command the shift, manage supervisors, or approve disciplinary or administrative actions. Authority is limited to assigned areas and routine operational activity. Requirements

  • Five years' experience in security or law enforcement work, at least three years of which is at least comparable to the work of the Hospital Security Officer.
  • Ability to obtain the Supervisor certification from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 6 months of hire and maintain certification for duration of employment.
  • Possession of appropriate driver's license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise security officers, clerks, and assigned temporary staff.
  • Conduct shift briefings and communicate assignments, priorities, and safety information.
  • Assign patrol zones and fixed posts in accordance with approved staffing plans.
  • Provide real-time coaching, guidance, and performance feedback.
  • Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Manage routine calls for service and day-to-day security activity.
  • Ensure appropriate and visible security coverage.
  • Monitor patrol activity, response times, and officer performance.
  • Adjust assignments within the shift to meet operational needs.
  • Serve as initial incident commander for routine and moderate incidents.
  • Provide on-scene leadership and direct officer actions.
  • Ensure de-escalation, safety, and control of incidents.
  • Escalate high-risk, multi-unit, or unusual incidents to PVD1.
  • Review officer reports for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Ensure required reports and documentation are submitted according to standards.
  • Document significant shift events, staffing issues, and performance matters occurring during the shift.
  • Provide day-to-day performance feedback.
  • Document performance issues and positive performance.
  • Recommend disciplinary action with supporting documentation.
  • Assist with performance evaluations.
  • Conduct initial fact-finding and routine investigations.
  • Collect statements, basic evidence, and document findings.
  • Transfer investigative ownership to PVD1 when incidents escalate beyond routine scope.
  • Implement staffing plans established by PVD1.
  • Identify real-time coverage gaps within assigned areas.
  • Notify PVD1 when additional resources are required.
  • Respond to service requests and departmental concerns.
  • Communicate trends, risks, and recurring issues to PVD1.
  • Assist with onboarding and training as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and standards.
