About The Position

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center Quality Programs is seeking an energetic, detailed, self-motivating, current Oncology Data Specialist-Certified (ODS-C). We are looking for a team player with current abstraction experience. This position will join our staff of 7 ODS-C and 2 ODS-C operations managers to meet the needs of this NCI designated Cancer Center. The ODS-C will case find, abstract medical records, perform follow-up and updates, prepare for cancer conferences and assist with regulatory and certification requirements. This is a remote position. Persons applying for this position must reside in New Mexico. Our world-class multi-disciplinary teams of cancer physicians work with nurses, pharmacists, patient navigators, and supportive care specialists to design a personalized care plan for each patient. They deliver care seamlessly in a compassionate, culturally-sensitive way. Our teams also work closely with our outstanding research scientists to bring our patients the most advanced cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment. We are steadfast in our commitment to serve all the people of New Mexico. Our research focuses on those cancers that affect New Mexicans most, and our clinical trials focus on those studies that offer the most benefit to people here. As the Official Cancer Center of the state of New Mexico, our mission is to provide the unique, specialized and essential cancer care that all New Mexicans deserve. We sought and earned Comprehensive designation from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in achieving that mission. Today, we are one of only 57 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country and are the only cancer center in our state to hold this designation. Our 136+ board-certified oncology physicians, 123+ research scientists and 600+ staff members are dedicated to providing each of our patients the most advanced treatment and the finest support from the moment their care begins. Our NCI designation gives us access to nationwide clinical trials that offer our patients the most advanced cancer treatments. We and other NCI cancer centers develop these new therapies. We encourage our patients to discuss their eligibility for clinical trials with their team of physicians to get access to the most advanced cancer treatments that are based on the latest scientific discoveries. In addition, we offer multiple targeted therapy protocols to bring our patients a lifetime of the most advanced care. These clinical trials give the people who join the opportunity to have their cancer tissues genetically sequenced, helping cancer research and possibly helping them to be matched to promising anticancer therapies available in the future. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 136 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state. And they partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. In 2024 they treated more than 15,000 patients in almost 105,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 2,075 patients participated in cancer clinical trials to study new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 123 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNM Cancer Center were awarded $38.3 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 750 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.
