We are expanding and adding animals to our collection, which means we are increasing our staffing levels, specifically in the vet and animal care departments. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the veterinary field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of veterinary aquatic experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of managerial experience directly supervising staff.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends, early mornings/nights, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Ability to respond in case of emergency situations.
  • Thorough understanding of medical equipment, including anesthetic machines, anesthesia monitoring, in-house lab equipment, and radiology equipment.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures in aquatic animals.
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of aquatic animal health, including common diseases and treatments, general husbandry, environmental quality, zoonotic diseases, and conservation issues in a range of taxa.
  • Ability to perform field response for stranded marine mammals.
  • Experience using independent judgment and discretion in providing first-response and emergency first-aid patient care.
  • Demonstration of mathematical competence and ability to manage a budget.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally and follow complex instructions.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to be certified in the state of Florida.
  • Ability to obtain Florida driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Veterinary technician degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program (CVT/LVT) preferred.
  • Familiarity with Tracks electronic records is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with teams to schedule daily medical care of resident and rehabilitating animals, including sample collection and processing, diagnostic procedures, approximations, and quarantine protocols.
  • Ensure veterinary technical support for all resident medical emergencies and stranded animal events, including those occurring outside of regular work hours, with the ability to coordinate and implement an appropriate response in the absence of a veterinarian.
  • Manage veterinary technicians, including hiring, training, scheduling, goal setting, performance evaluations, corrective action, and terminations.
  • Oversee maintenance of all hospital areas, servicing of associated medical equipment, and annual review and negotiation of contracts for hospital equipment and services.
  • Perform duties related to purchasing pharmaceuticals, hospital and laboratory supplies, manage vendor relationships, obtain equipment quotes, and dispose of expired drugs and supplies.
  • Monitor and manage the animal health annual budget, maintaining accurate and current records for accounting.
  • Participate in weekly rounds with husbandry staff.
  • Maintain biohazardous waste and sharps disposal program.
  • Maintain aquarium oxygen supply.
  • Assist veterinarian with medical record keeping and appointment scheduling.
  • Assist with euthanasia and post-mortem examinations.
  • Collaborate with animal care staff in training husbandry behaviors to ensure they meet medical needs and participate in training when appropriate.
  • Function as a veterinary technician as needed.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures relevant to the veterinary care of the collection, with regular evaluation of medical processes and protocols to ensure efficient hospital operations.
  • Participate in research projects as deemed appropriate.
  • Adhere to all OSHA, USDA, DEA, and FWC regulations and make recommendations for work orders to ensure compliance.
  • Coordinate with other departments to promote open communication and achieve CMA’s goals.
  • Participate in PR and media events, including professional interviews, as deemed necessary or appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
