Responsibilities

  • Conducts a needs assessment of each department annually.
  • Develops and directs orientation programs, in-services, and continuing education of nursing and ancillary staff of the clinical areas.
  • Conducts classes and/or provides individual instruction.
  • Develops objectives for each in-service and evaluates presentation and teaching material through staff input and suggestions.
  • Interacts professionally with the nursing staff and nurse managers to determine specific educational needs and to coordinate educational programs to meet those needs.
  • Develops and reviews instructional materials; set up and demonstrate patient care equipment.
  • Interacts professionally with vendor/manufacturer sales representatives; coordinates equipment demonstrations in collaboration with Materials Management/Director of Surgical Services.
  • Assigns in-service topics to staff members to develop and teach.
  • Implement and supervise nurse preceptor program; supervises all students and new graduates in the clinical areas in coordination with Clinical Managers/Leads.
  • Conducts clinical rounds on a regular basis; enhance open communication with clinical departments.
  • Assists with the coordination of performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Works with CNO to develop a budget for educational programs; ability to write grant proposals and manage the grant requirements.
  • Assists with organization-wide education projects.
  • Documents staff attendance at in-services; ensures educational requirements, organization requirements, and standards are met on an annual basis by all staff members.
  • Evaluates and documents staff performance of clinical skills.
  • Assists nurse managers with the planning and implementation of staff development programs.
  • Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
  • Serves as a resource person, consultant to nursing and medical staff, students, and ancillary staff members.
  • May perform clinical duties if needed. If so, performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors; follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Studies current trends, new technology/development, teaching methodologies through professional journals, seminars/conferences, professional associations, etc.
  • Performs administrative duties as needed; management reports; maintains in-service, orientation records; plans a monthly calendar for education activities; orders supplies and equipment, etc.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and Joint Commission regulations.
  • Work with leadership to implement and monitor standard processes for clinical departments.
  • Provide department education of Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Develops/coordinates education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation.
  • Identifies and evaluates instructional materials in all types of media and formats.
  • Provides educational opportunities that benefit nurses at all stages of their career development.
  • Develops evidence-based educational materials.
  • Supports the integration of research into practice.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; ensures patient confidentiality. Manages a fair workload, prioritizes tasks appropriately, develops good work procedures, and manages time well.
  • Is attentive to detail and accuracy and committed to excellence.
  • Able to work side by side a staff member caring for patients and provide support to new staff.
  • Participates in committees, task forces, and projects within the hospital.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Actively participates in the department's performance improvement activities.
