The Hospice CNA provides direct care to hospice patients wherever they consider home, including personal residences, assisted living facilities, and skilled nursing facilities. The role serves patients from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and all age groups, from infants through geriatric patients with life-limiting illness. CNAs typically see 5–7 patients per day and spend about 45–60 minutes with each patient. The schedule is typically Monday to Friday, 8 AM to an unspecified end time, after orientation; flexibility may be needed to accommodate staffing needs. Responsibilities include providing personal care, documenting care at the bedside using a company-provided cellphone, and, when caring for patients in facilities, potentially charting in the facility’s electronic medical record. The CNA travels between patient visits, maintains care supplies in their vehicle, and obtains additional supplies at the local branch office. Mileage between visits is reimbursable. The CNA coordinates visit times with patients or caregivers, communicates patient-status changes and concerns to RN case managers, and may train caregivers in personal care within the CNA’s scope of practice. The position requires current state certification or registration in North Carolina or South Carolina, completion of a CNA course, and ongoing in-service training and competency assessments. No prior experience is required, though two years of hospice, home health, or oncology experience is preferred. The role involves physical patient-care duties, driving, and exposure to health and environmental hazards during home visits.
