About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Grounds Management Division of the Parks and Recreation Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. An employee in this classification performs work requiring knowledge and skills acquired prior to assuming the position. Essential functions of the job include: independently performing work activities and/or assisting employees in the preparation of nursery stock utilized for planting various gardens and planters throughout the City of Oklahoma City. Horticulture Workers I also have responsibility of caring for various specialized planting areas. In addition, workers have some contact with the public to identify plant varieties, various plant diseases and suggest remedies, or to list and explain various rules and regulations. Along with the above duties the worker may also exercise technical supervision over Nursery Workers, Grounds Maintenance Operators, and/or part-time personnel.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of fundamentals of horticulture.
  • Skill in giving clear and concise work instructions and demonstrating work procedures.
  • Skill in communicating with tact and diplomacy.
  • Skill in constructing and maintaining plant areas and repairing related equipment and facilities.
  • Ability to evaluate employees work products.
  • Ability to make visual determinations.
  • Ability to record information accurately.

Responsibilities
