About The Position

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Grounds, leads the horticultural team in creating and maintaining a natural, multi-season environment featuring outdoor plants, flowers, shrubs, and gardens unique to the Western PA region that will captivate strong guest interest and enhance the experience expectations for a high-end luxury destination resort. This position must be committed to making every experience memorable all while having fun and relishing the incredible atmosphere of the resort.

Requirements

  • Certification in horticulture, botany, natural sciences, or a related field required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of greenhouse operations, propagation methods, chemical applications, insect and disease control, plant health, and pruning preferred.
  • Must be experienced on heavy equipment such as skid steers, forklifts, backhoes, snowplows, and all tractors.
  • Minimum of two years experience as a team leader or manager with demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and schedule work assignments for self and others as well as developing, planning, and implementing short- and long-range goals.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain high horticultural standards and practices; provide direction, training and motivation for the horticultural staff.
  • Serve as a hands-on leader, actively working in the daily horticultural tasks in the exterior gardens and interior plantings (where assigned).
  • Manage and support overall plant health and soil fertility strategies for all gardens, including integrated pest management in the indoor and outdoor gardens, with a special focus on plant care in a multi-season environment.
  • Assist in the establishment and execute a master plan that aligns with the long-term vision for Nemacolin gardens.
  • Maintain inventory and listing of the gardens, garden plantings, care and treatment operating procedures, and necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Establish and monitor the horticulture financial and capital budget.
  • Manage budgets in-line with the approved plan through effective scheduling and monitoring of hours.
  • Responsible for any horticultural capital projects as needed (i.e. installation of new gardens).
  • Create and execute gardens, tours, and exhibits that enhance the guest experience.
  • Utilize the horticulture master plan as a means of identifying guest needs and establishing a plan of action to exceeding those expectations.
  • Lead the team in guest interactions - utilizing Nemacolin’s brand standards, providing the guest with information on the resort, the grounds, and highlighting unique features of the resort and its landscape offerings.
  • Ensure department associates utilize the resort Forbes service standards in exceeding guest expectations.
  • Lead the selection effort and integration of all horticulture associates.
  • Coach, develop, train, manage, and provide feedback to associates, ensuring performance quality and aesthetically stimulating environments for our guests and associates.
  • Plan direct, and coordinate the daily activities of associates engaged in watering resort indoor and outdoor plants, pruning and planting woody and herbaceous plants.
  • Create standard operating procedures that establish clarity and consistency, drive accountability, and ensure safe operation and execution.
