Requirements

  • Be enrolled in or completed a Degree in Horticulture Therapy or equivalent
  • Completed the required 480 hours of internship
  • Be an eligible member of the Canadian Horticulture Therapy Association
  • Be excited by our objectives, our Village philosophy and the family values that shape all aspects of life in a Schlegel Village
  • Display a caring and respectful attitude toward our residents, families, and team members

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with seniors is an asset
  • Knowledge of therapy practices, methods, techniques and opportunities to improve resident’s well-being and holistic health
  • An understanding of the relevant sections of the Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007

Responsibilities

  • Support and embrace our resident-centered social culture and be proud to deliver the highest quality of recreational programing to our residents.
  • Work as key members of our Village and neighbourhood multidisciplinary teams to understand residents’ individual needs, and advocate for residents to actively participate in decisions about their care.
  • Foster exemplary relationships with residents, their families and the Village team to deliver holistic care that focusses on flexible living and quality of life.
  • Plan gardening-based activities, either on a per-session basis or incorporated into a larger curriculum.
  • Providing hands on experiences for our residents including, but not limited to planting seeds and caring for plants both indoors and outside.
  • In combination with the Recreation Team, the Horticulture Therapist can support our residents to learn, grow, find life purpose and meaning.
  • The team plan and implement programs that contribute to a resident’s holistic health care goals, as outlined in Care Plans (including RAI MDS-Raps, Coding and Activities Initial Assessment), by encouraging physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive growth for residents.
