About the Agency The Illinois Racing Board (IRB) was created in 1933, and its legal mandate is defined in the Illinois Horse Racing Act of 1975. The jurisdiction, supervision, powers, and duties of the Illinois Racing Board shall extend under the Act to every person who holds or conducts any race meeting within the State of Illinois where horse racing is permitted for any stake, purse or reward. The mission of the Illinois Racing Board is to regulate horse racing through the enforcement of the Act and its rules and regulations and to ensure the honesty and integrity of Illinois racing and wagering.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of experience working with horses.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of experience generating and maintaining spreadsheets and documents, and utilizing email to send and receive documents.
  • Ability to travel to all locations under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Racing Board
  • All employees and members of their household cannot hold an IRB license or have an economic interest (including employment) in a license holder, including during the 12-month period prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to recognize a horse in distress, injured, or ill.
  • Experience scanning microchips, and reading lip tatttoos, freeze brands, and other horse markings.
  • Ability to work well with people and obtain cooperation in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Generate horse identification sheets for each day's race from the appropriate breed registry.
  • Verify each race participant's identification by means of microchip, tattoo or freeze brand, reporting any discrepancies to Stewards and breed registry.
  • Assist the Stewards with administration of breathalyzer and complete any necessary reports.
