About The Position

Ensures that horses, riders, and pedestrians can safely cross traveled roadways at designated crossing points throughout the Keeneland Property.

Requirements

  • Attend a two-hour training session in Horse Crossing Safety and basic policy and procedure education for personnel assigned to the security department.
  • Maintain an appropriate state of dress including supplied Keeneland uniform (shirts, hats, vests, rain suits, etc.) and provide own khaki pants and acceptable but comfortable footwear.
  • Applicant must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work varying hours during sales and racing days with little advanced notice.
  • Possess good verbal communication skills.
  • Apply sound judgement and use discretion when dealing with patrons/employees and/or sensitive information.
  • Demonstrate good customer relations and interaction skills, and the ability to think on his/her feet.
  • Operate and work in a multitask environment and have the ability to contribute and participate in a team environment; applicant must be of sound mind and moral character.
  • Must successfully complete an interview structured to evaluate their general knowledge and abilities to perform required tasks to include, but not limited to, their decision-making abilities.
  • Must agree to abide by the Drug Free Workplace policy of Keeneland.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that vehicle, commercial and foot traffic is promptly stopped to allow horses and riders to safely cross at will in a fixed location.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with vehicle drivers to ensure they stop and remain in place as they approach all horse crossings.
  • Communicate clearly and efficiently with the Horse Crossing Supervisor via two-way radio to update them on any irregularities or issues that may arise.
  • Assist with other traffic control duties throughout the property should the need arise.
  • Ensure that all gates in their area are closed and secured, unless the gates are in active use.
  • In the event of a “Loose Horse”, ensure that all gates are secured, and that any sightings of a loose horse are immediately broadcast on their Keeneland Issued Radio.
  • Facilitate the prompt movement of emergency vehicles (human and equine) responding to incidents in the barn area or on the tracks.
