It works across engineering, safety, validation, legal, policy, and product development teams. The role also supports Functional Safety and SOTIF assurance, audit readiness, regulatory strategy, and the ongoing management of safety evidence throughout the product lifecycle. This role is fully onsite at Lucid 1 in Newark, California, or the Phoenix, Arizona Hub. Daily in-person presence is required. Domestic travel may be needed, with potential for some international travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in automotive engineering, autonomous driving systems, functional safety, product safety, homologation, regulatory compliance, or related fields.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600, ISO 34502, and Safety Management System principles.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or assessing safety cases for safety-critical systems.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under time-sensitive conditions and meet project milestones.
  • Ability to travel domestically as needed, with potential for some international travel.
  • Ability to work fully onsite in Newark, California, or Phoenix, Arizona, with daily in-person presence.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with Level 3 and/or Level 4 automated driving systems.
  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions, technical assessments, certification activities, or compliance programs.
  • Experience interacting with regulators, technical services, approval authorities, certification bodies, or governmental organizations.
  • Understanding of global ADS regulatory frameworks and approval pathways.
  • Experience presenting complex technical concepts to engineering audiences and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with safety assurance methodologies, risk assessment frameworks, structured safety arguments, and evidence-based safety demonstrations.
  • Strong understanding of autonomous driving technologies and safety assurance principles.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering teams to develop, review, or validate safety evidence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead independent technical review and assessment of ADS safety cases for Level 3 and Level 4 automated driving systems.
  • Collaborate with safety case developers, system engineers, and cross-functional engineering teams to strengthen safety arguments and identify gaps, assumptions, weaknesses, or areas requiring additional validation.
  • Ensure safety claims are supported by objective, traceable, and defensible evidence from simulation, software verification, closed-course testing, real-world testing, operational experience, and field performance data.
  • Challenge and validate the completeness, consistency, technical rigor, and regulatory adequacy of safety arguments before internal approval and external submission.
  • Coordinate collection, review, and integration of safety evidence across systems engineering, validation, Functional Safety, SOTIF, cybersecurity, and operational safety teams.
  • Establish and maintain frameworks for evidence traceability, configuration management, document control, and lifecycle management of safety artifacts.
  • Review how software updates, hardware modifications, feature enhancements, operational changes, and ODD expansions affect safety-case validity throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Drive closure of safety-case findings and recommendations through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Develop and improve safety assurance methodologies, review processes, templates, and best practices for consistent and repeatable assessments.
  • Keep safety artifacts, evidence, and arguments audit-ready and aligned with evolving regulatory expectations and industry best practices.
  • Represent Lucid’s safety assurance expertise in discussions with regulators, approval authorities, technical services, and governmental organizations worldwide.
  • Develop strategies for demonstrating ADS safety and achieving regulatory acceptance across global markets.
  • Prepare and present safety-case materials for regulatory submissions, technical reviews, audits, governmental assessments, and approval processes.
  • Lead technical discussions on safety performance, risk-management strategies, validation approaches, and supporting safety evidence.
  • Respond to technical questions, review comments, and regulatory feedback using engineering data and structured safety arguments.
  • Monitor emerging ADS regulations, guidance, and industry practices, and translate them into actionable engineering and compliance requirements.
  • Support regulatory positions and technical responses concerning autonomous-vehicle deployment and safety demonstrations.
  • Support Functional Safety (ISO 26262) and SOTIF (ISO 21448) assurance activities across Lucid’s safety-critical systems.
  • Review Functional Safety and SOTIF work products to ensure they support safety assurance objectives and regulatory expectations.
  • Support safety assessments and audit readiness for electronically controlled vehicle systems, including braking, steering, propulsion, power distribution, and other safety-related controls.
  • Support safety assurance for advanced driver assistance systems, including Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Emergency Lane Keeping Systems (ELKS), and other active safety technologies.
  • Support Functional Safety and SOTIF reviews for Level 2, Level 2+, and Level 2++ driving automation features and their system architectures.
  • Collaborate with Functional Safety, SOTIF, Systems Engineering, Validation, Active Safety, and ADS development teams to ensure safety artifacts are complete, traceable, technically sound, and audit-ready.
  • Support internal, external, regulatory, and third-party audits related to ADS safety, Functional Safety, SOTIF, Safety Management Systems, and organizational safety processes.
  • Coordinate technical evidence packages, presentations, responses, and documentation for assessments and audits.
  • Keep safety-case documentation, governance processes, and supporting records inspection-ready throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Support closure of audit findings and corrective actions, as well as continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to readiness for future regulatory assessments, conformity evaluations, and deployment approvals.
