About The Position

MakeUseOf (MUO), a leading technology publication, is seeking Home & DIY Tech writers to join their team. MUO aims to empower readers of all tech levels with the knowledge to maximize their technology. They simplify complex topics into understandable guides, offering valuable takeaways on gear, troubleshooting, and product recommendations. The Home section focuses on the intersection of practical technology, home automation, and DIY hardware, covering topics such as power tools and battery ecosystems (Ryobi, Milwaukee, DeWalt), smart home sensors and hubs, smart home protocols (Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave), home networking infrastructure (Cat6/Cat6a cabling, Ethernet drops), display & audio cabling (HDMI standards, AV routing), and workshop tech & practical DIY upgrades. The content is geared towards a general audience, making it approachable and practical, even for those new to home automation or DIY projects, rather than targeting professional electricians or commercial installers.

Requirements

  • CV, Cover Letter, screening questions, links to previously published work
  • In your cover letter, please address the following questions: Why do you want to write for MUO? What makes you the right fit for this role? (You can touch upon previous experience and your passion for home tech)
  • Applicants must be highly motivated and possess the following attributes:
  • Relevant experience in writing and editing
  • A self-starting attitude: being willing to pitch and work on ideas without being prompted
  • Knowledge across a variety of tech (updates to the latest versions + first-hand use of products, platforms, and gear are required)

Nice To Haves

  • Basic SEO knowledge is preferred, but clear writing and understanding our audience comes first

Responsibilities

  • Write consistently and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Pitch ideas and work with editors to refine them.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest tech news, products, and updates.
  • Work within a CMS: adhere to style guidelines, finding and formatting images, adding links, etc.
