About The Position

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities. Community Homes for Children (CHC) is one of the many services offered by New Directions; this program provides homes for children and youth with behavioral and emotional difficulties. Our community-based resources promote a sense of belonging and provide opportunities to engage in a meaningful life. This is achieved by creating a home environment that welcomes the participation of the child or youth as a member, supporting his or her interests and goals, and helping maintain and strengthen the bond between the child or youth and his or her significant others. We provide an environment that is non-judgmental, safe and caring. Community Home for Children operates 24 hours, 7 days a week, in fast-paced shift staffed homes operated by New Directions.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a B.S.W./B.A. (psychology, social work, or related field) with experience working with children in care and knowledge of licensing regulations for children’s residential settings.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working with Level 4/5 children and youth
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience in a community-living setting
  • Flexibility in your day to supervise team at varying hours.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability and commitment to work with high needs children and youth.
  • Strong organizational skills are required for this position.
  • Ability to transfer knowledge and awareness into behaviors and expectations recognized as appropriate by members of identified cultures and by people with lived experience
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a safe, reliable vehicle for work purposes
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite of applications including Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Current First Aid/CPR
  • Understanding of person-centered approach
  • The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks; and must supply a current driver’s abstract.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of behavioral management and trauma-informed strategies are assets
  • Experience with harm reduction approaches is considered an asset
  • American Sign Language (ASL) is considered an asset
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training is considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Case management
  • Counselling and developing treatment plans
  • Supervising, leading, and evaluating staff
  • Supporting children and youth living in the homes
  • Orienting, training and scheduling staff
  • Tracking home maintenance and repairs
  • Budgeting, balancing and accounting for monthly expenditures and administrative duties
  • Working collaboratively with families. Liaising with schools, neighbours, social workers, and other professionals as part of a unified team for youth.
  • Working shifts, including cooking and light housekeeping duties during applicable shifts, and participating in the on-call rotation
