About The Position

The Apple Home Product Systems Quality team is seeking an experienced Systems Quality Engineer to own end-to-end validation of hardware, software, and machine learning features for Apple's Home products. The role bridges functional testing, user studies, and algorithm performance, addressing challenges at the intersection of system design, real-world constraints, and customer experience. The engineer is responsible for functional testing in their ownership area and partners closely with Data Science teammates to plan, execute, and iterate on feature-level tests and advanced algorithm small user studies. These studies and tests directly influence hardware and model design and performance, including experiences such as Apple HomeView recognition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years in an end-user quality-focused role.
  • Good understanding of QA methodologies, including test planning, scheduling, and regression.
  • Strong programming or scripting skills, with hands-on experience in Python or an equivalent language.
  • Experience testing products that use computer vision, machine learning, or related technologies.
  • Ability to take accountability for the quality of a technical area and demonstrate understanding of how it works.
  • Experience working with partners across teams and organizations to communicate status clearly and raise critical issues.
  • Ability to think analytically, reduce data sets, solve problems, and innovate.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 or more years of industry experience in a quality-focused role, preferably with consumer electronics or connected/smart home devices.
  • Strong background in statistical experimental design and hypothesis testing applied to interpreting system-level test results.
  • Experience managing participant-study operations, including recruiting, consent and privacy protocols, and scheduling logistics, for small- and larger-scale collections.
  • Data analysis, visualization, and reporting experience with tools such as Tableau.
  • Understanding of how to test and quantify performance of sensing technologies such as camera, IMU, capacitive, environmental, light, motion, radar, optical, and acoustic technologies, and evaluate user impact and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end validation of hardware, software, and machine learning features for Apple Home products.
  • Conduct functional testing in the assigned ownership area.
  • Partner with Data Science teammates to plan, execute, and iterate on feature-level tests and algorithm user studies.
  • Use test and study findings to influence hardware and model design and performance.
  • Be accountable for quality in a technical area and communicate status and critical issues across teams and organizations.
