About The Position
MakeUseOf (MUO) is seeking Home Improvement & DIY Tech writers for a remote, contractual role. MUO is a technology publication that helps readers understand and get more from technology by turning complex topics into accessible, practical guides, product recommendations, and troubleshooting articles. The Home section covers practical technology, home automation, and DIY hardware, including power tools and battery ecosystems, smart home sensors and hubs, smart home protocols, home networking, display and audio cabling, workshop technology, and practical DIY upgrades. Articles should be approachable, practical, and engaging for general readers, including people who are new to home automation and DIY. The section is not aimed at professional electricians or commercial installers.
Requirements
- Provide a CV, cover letter, responses to screening questions, and links to previously published work.
- Address in the cover letter why you want to write for MUO and why you are a good fit, including relevant experience and interest in home technology where applicable.
- Have relevant writing and editing experience.
- Be self-starting and willing to pitch and develop ideas without prompting.
- Have knowledge across a variety of technology, including updates to the latest versions and first-hand use of products, platforms, and gear.

- Basic SEO knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Write consistently and meet assigned deadlines.
- Pitch story ideas and work with editors to refine them; authors are expected primarily to pitch ideas based on their own interests and expertise, although they may also claim editor-created ideas.
- Stay up to date on technology news, products, and updates.
- Work within a CMS, follow style guidelines, find and format images, and add links.
