About The Position

Under supervision, performs journey-level Hoisting Engineer work, operating heavy construction and off-road equipment used to excavate, lift, move and load earth, water and sewer pipes, and other heavy materials and equipment; and perform related duties as required. Class is a multi-rate title; rate of pay to individual positions is dependent on the Class (I, II and III or Mobile Crane) or type equipment operated.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Operating Engineer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, OR Three (3) years of journey-level work experience as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, OR Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer, plus one (1) year of journey-level work experience as an Operating/Hoisting Engineer
  • A commercial driver's license (CDL), Class A or B, as issued by the State of Illinois
  • Positions operating a mobile crane must possess a Crane Operator's license as issued by the City of Chicago
  • Candidates must pass a skills assessment. Test results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Bidders who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in seniority order. External applicants who receive a passing score will be hired in lottery/random order.
  • Test 1: High Lift Fluid Inspection and Operation - You will be required to access and identify the location of key operating fluid. You will be required to safely operate the High Lift to scoop and load material into a dump truck.
  • Test 2: Combination Back Hoe Fluid Inspection and Operation - You will be required to access and identify the location of key operating fluids. You will be required to safely operate the Back Hoe part of the Combination Back Hoe to excavate material from the ground. You will be required to safely operate the Loader part of the Combination Back Hoe to backfill, compact, and grade the excavated area.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates heavy construction and off-road equipment including front-end loaders, backhoes, compactors, pavers, graders and excavators at a work site to dig trenches, backfill, street and ground openings, asphalt street paving and tamping, and loading, lifting and setting pipe
  • Operates air compressors, pumps and other power equipment at construction sites
  • Controls and maneuvers heavy construction equipment by using switches, moving levers and foot pedals and applying knowledge of equipment operations
  • Inspects equipment for operating condition, checking fluid levels, cables and hoses for wear and replacing worn parts to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Changes oil and lubricates moving parts at regularly scheduled intervals to ensure efficient performance of equipment
  • Operates a mobile crane, requiring a Crane Operator's license, to lift materials and other heavy objects at a work site
  • Prepares work activity reports
